The image is almost square and is dominated by a deep black background with a slight grain. At the top, slightly left of center, two lines of pale, greenish-white text read “LORRI Image of M7 Star Cluster” and, below it, “2010-June-25 20:54:21 UTC.” The rest of the frame is dark sky scattered with roughly three dozen white stars of very uneven brightness. Most are tiny, faint points barely visible above the visual noise; others, such as the one at the lower right edge or the one near the center, stand out as more intense pinpricks with a faint halo. There is no obvious figure: the stars are spread irregularly, somewhat more concentrated along a diagonal band running from the center toward the upper right, and more dispersed near the edges. Looked at slowly, the background reveals fine horizontal bands and a static-like texture typical of an electronic sensor, giving it the feel of an old screen or a dark photocopy. There are no planets, people, horizon, or foreground objects; scale is impossible to grasp without outside information, because each point of light can hide an enormous distance. The overall feeling is one of silence, emptiness, and remoteness.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the text at the top, the only human reference, and then let your eyes lose themselves in the darkness. Next, look for the brightest stars and try to connect them, noticing how no clear shape emerges. Finally, move in closer to the grain: that is where the instrument, not just the sky, becomes visible.

ContextContexto

According to the source data, this scientific photograph was released on July 27, 2010, while the text embedded in the image states that it was taken on June 25, 2010, at 20:54:21 UTC. It is credited to NASA, the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, and the Southwest Research Institute. The New Horizons team was calibrating LORRI — the Long Range Reconnaissance Imager — by photographing the open star cluster M7. New Horizons is the probe launched in 2006 toward Pluto, so it was probably still en route at the time. M7 is a group of stars born from the same cloud; its exact appearance depends on the instrument used. The probe's precise position when this image was taken is not stated.

Curious detailDato curioso

A cluster known since Antiquity, like M7, can serve as a modern ruler: because the positions and brightness of its stars are already well known, engineers can use them to check whether a camera billions of kilometers away is pointing and seeing correctly.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. How does our perception of the sky change when we know that an image was taken to test a camera and not only to show something beautiful?¿Cómo cambia nuestra percepción del cielo cuando sabemos que una imagen se tomó para probar una cámara y no solo para mostrar algo bello?
  2. What does this grainy blackness tell us about the limits of the machines we use to look into deep space?¿Qué nos dice este fondo negro y granuloso sobre los límites de las máquinas con las que miramos el espacio profundo?
  3. If each point is a star, what stories do we project onto a pattern that forms no recognizable figure?

What I notice most is the surface: a deep black #030303 with fine grain and those horizontal bands of static that reveal the LORRI sensor. The pale greenish text at the top left reads LORRI Image of M7 Star Cluster and the date 2010-June-25 20:54:21 UTC. About three dozen white dots, some with a soft halo. It is not a pretty picture, it is a working image, a calibration frame released in July 2010, and its fragility lies in that noise that looks like dust.

This image reminds me that calibration is also observing. The New Horizons probe, launched in 2006 toward Pluto, pointed its LORRI camera at the open cluster M7 on June 25 2010 at 20:54:21 UTC. We see about three dozen white stars on a grainy black background, more concentrated in a diagonal toward the upper right. There is no planet or horizon, just points at immense distances. The photo was released by NASA, Johns Hopkins APL and Southwest Research Institute on July 27 2010.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a TV with no signal but with little stars turned on. The background is black with little lines and dots, like when my TV goes shhh. At the top there is something in light green with a very exact date and time. There are about thirty little white stars, some tiny you can barely see and others brighter like the one at the bottom right. There is nothing else, just darkness and lights far, far away. It feels silent, like no one could talk out there.
