What you would seeLo que verías

Against a nearly black, deep, grainy background sprinkled with hundreds of tiny white, blue, and golden points, a spiral galaxy tilted diagonally dominates the center. Its core is a compact, luminous oval in a warm yellow tone, surrounded by an elongated whitish bar that seems to pass through it. From the ends of that bar, two broad spiral arms curve outward, made of irregular filaments of pale blue, white, and grayish light, with a dusty, mottled texture like clouds of barely resolved stars. The left arm forms a dark arc inside it and opens outward; the right arm extends farther, breaks apart at the top, and suggests a faint tail fading into darkness. Between the arms, above and to the right of the core, there is a smaller, diffuse yellow patch, the companion galaxy. Around the main structure are isolated brighter stars, several of them mustard-colored, especially along the left and lower edges. The image has low definition and visible grain: its contours are not sharp, but dissolve into tiny dots. Its scale feels immense and indeterminate; with no earthly references, only the contrast between the dense center and the open arms gives a sense of rotation, depth, and slow movement.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start at the bright yellow core and follow the whitish bar outward to where the spiral arms begin. Then look for the small yellow smudge in the upper right, between the arms: that faint patch changes the image from a portrait of one galaxy into a scene of interaction.

ContextContexto

According to the source data, this is an ultraviolet image from NASA's Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX), released on May 5, 2005, and credited to NASA/JPL-Caltech/SSC. It shows the interacting pair formed by NGC 1097, a barred spiral galaxy, and NGC 1097A, its small elliptical companion. In ultraviolet light, young, hot stars usually stand out, so spiral arms, where star formation is common, appear especially bright and bluish, while the core tends toward yellower tones. The source record does not state the exact distance, dimensions, or observing site; this is probably a composition of telescope data, not a photograph as it would appear to the naked eye.

Curious detailDato curioso

A surprising visual fact: the companion galaxy is not a bright spiral, but a small yellowish blur almost hidden among the larger galaxy's arms, so it can easily be mistaken for just another background star.

I pause on the texture of this GALEX ultraviolet image from May 5, 2005. I see an almost black and grainy background dotted with hundreds of tiny white, blue and golden specks. The warm yellow core of NGC 1097 is crossed by a whitish bar and two pale blue arms with a dusty, mottled look. I am struck by how the soft grain and blurred edges are not a flaw, but the trace of light captured beyond what our eyes can see.

What excites me most is what the ultraviolet light from NASA/JPL-Caltech GALEX reveals. Those bright bluish arms of the barred spiral NGC 1097 are nurseries of young, hot stars. The central bar crossing the yellow nucleus channels them, and the elliptical companion NGC 1097A, that small yellow smudge to the upper right, interacts gravitationally with it. Each grayish filament is a swarm of distant suns slowly rotating in the darkness.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a swirl of glitter in the dark sky. In the middle there is a bright little yellow egg with a white stripe across it like a ribbon. From there two giant arms of blue and white clouds spin out and get tiny at the ends. One even looks like a little tail fading away. Up to the right there is another smaller yellow ball, its little friend. I like counting the golden dots shining around like fireflies.
