On a black background overlaid with a faint coordinate grid, the image looks like a scientific diagram floating in space. At the top center the timestamp reads «2007 Feb 24 13:54:00». Two axes frame the plot: at the bottom «RA (Deg)» from 262 to 254, and on the left «Dec (Deg)» from -16 to -22. On the center-right, a small wireframe sphere in white and black stands for Jupiter, with a tiny orange dot labeled «Io» to its left. From Jupiter three soft conical beams in pale blue-white, reddish and greenish light extend toward three white inset boxes containing line graphs. Each box is a spectrum: horizontal axis «Wavelength (Å)» from 600 to 1800, vertical axis «Relative Brightness». Upper left reads «Io's Atmosphere» with jagged peaks and a tall spike near 1200 Å; upper right «Io Plasma Torus» with a similar dominant spike; lower right «Sunlight Reflected From Jupiter» with a curve rising sharply toward 1800 Å. A large red-bordered square labeled «Alice Field of View» dominates the center-left, and two thin red lines with white arrows link that field to Io and Jupiter. A tiny legend at the bottom marks a yellow dot as «Solar System Body» and a red cross as «FOV boresight». The palette is dark and technical, with muted accents of red, blue and green, crisp white text and thin grid lines.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the large red square labeled «Alice Field of View» and follow the two thin red lines to Io and Jupiter. Then compare the three spectra and notice how the same wavelength range produces very different signatures. Look for the sharp peak near 1216 Å, a hydrogen signature visible in both Io's atmosphere and its plasma torus.

ContextContexto

The image comes from NASA, credited to NASA/JPL with Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory and Southwest Research Institute, dated April 2, 2007. It displays data from the Alice instrument aboard NASA's New Horizons spacecraft, which flew past Jupiter in February 2007 en route to Pluto. Alice is an ultraviolet imaging spectrometer built to study atmospheres and plasma environments. The visualization combines Alice's field of view position with three simultaneous spectra: Io's atmosphere, the Io plasma torus, and sunlight reflected from Jupiter. It is not a conventional visible-light photograph but a diagram of ultraviolet measurements made for science and public outreach.

Curious detailDato curioso

Alice was the first ultraviolet spectrometer to explore Pluto; during the 2007 Jupiter flyby it served as a rehearsal and managed to observe Jupiter, Io and the surrounding plasma at the same time, something single-target instruments cannot do.

The conservatorLa restauradora

I am interested in how this image is preserved when it is not a photograph but a data visualization. I see a balanced digital composition on a black background with a faint grid, three spectra and a sphere representing Jupiter. The red square labeled Alice Field of View is a graphic device that unifies the reading. The blue, reddish and green beams connect the bodies to their charts. As a conservator I value that the axes, date and lower legend remain legible so we can understand what Alice was measuring without altering the original.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

As a sky enthusiast this image excites me because it shows the invisible. We do not see a pretty Jupiter but what Alice captured in ultraviolet during the New Horizons flyby in February 2007. I notice the RA and Dec axes that locate everything in the sky, and the three spectra with wavelength from 600 to 1800 Å. One is Io's atmosphere, another the plasma torus and another the sunlight reflected from Jupiter. This is science in action on the way to Pluto, not a postcard.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a space map with a black background full of little squares. There is a small black and white ball that is Jupiter and right next to it an orange dot that is Io. From Jupiter come three lights like colorful flashlights in blue, red and green that reach white boxes with little mountains. It is as if the big red square were a magic window looking at everything. I like that it has little arrows and that the date says 2007. It feels like a game for hunting hidden lights.
