What you would seeLo que verías

The image is vertical and dominated by a dark, almost garnet-red background sprinkled with hundreds of points of pale blue and white light in very different sizes. Some are barely visible specks; others, especially in the upper-right and lower-right corners, shine brightly with cross-shaped glints. Running diagonally through the center, from the lower left toward the upper right, is an elongated, irregular, luminous structure, tilted about thirty degrees from the vertical. At its center is a bright yellow-green knot, flanked by a short dark band that seems to cut across it horizontally, like a waist or a shadow. Downward, the structure widens into a whitish, greenish cloud with diffuse edges and small bright patches at its tip. Upward, by contrast, it narrows and twists: it shifts through yellow and gold tones and ends in an orange, filamentary, fragmented trail, like illuminated smoke or a fraying plume. The overall texture is grainy, as is typical of an infrared astronomical image, with no objects recognizable at a human scale. The light does not come from a single visible source; it seems to emanate from the material itself, with strong contrasts between the deep red background and the cool blues of the stars.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the dark red background and the field of blue stars, then follow the diagonal streak from bottom to top. Pause at the bright green center and notice the short dark band crossing it. That small cut changes the reading: it is no longer just a trail of light, but matter organized around a hidden center.

ContextContexto

According to the source data, this image, dated November 29, 2007 and released by NASA, is an infrared view of a developing star and its flaring jets, taken by the Spitzer Space Telescope. Its English title, Baby Picture of our Solar System, invites us to read it as a possible “baby picture” of our own solar system: an idea of how it might have looked billions of years ago, when the Sun was still forming. The data do not give the specific name of the object or its location or distance, so which star this is cannot be known for certain from this record alone. The colors do not match direct human vision; they probably translate invisible infrared radiation into visible tones.

The conservatorLa restauradora

This image is not a traditional photograph but a translation of invisible infrared light into colors we can see, and that fascinates me as a conservator. The dark reddish background is speckled with hundreds of pale blue and white dots, some with cross-shaped glints. Across the center a diagonal structure tilted about thirty degrees holds a greenish yellow knot split by a short horizontal dark lane. Downward it widens into a diffuse whitish and greenish cloud, upward it turns golden and ends in orange filaments like smoke. I think about how to preserve its grainy texture without losing the contrast between warm and cool tones.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

What excites me is that we are seeing a baby star photographed by Spitzer on November 29 2007, presented as a possible portrait of our own solar system billions of years ago. The record does not give the object name or its distance, so I look at it without a label. That elongated diagonal structure is material and glowing jets around the forming star, with the central greenish yellow knot dimmed by a waist of dust. The light does not come from a visible bulb but from the material itself shining in infrared. Imagining that our young Sun might have looked like this leaves me speechless.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a giant feather floating in space. The background is dark red like velvet and full of little blue stars that shine, some with little cross-shaped sparkles in the corners. In the middle there is a long tilted cloud that is white with green at the bottom and yellow and orange at the top like fire coming apart into threads. In the center it has a greenish yellow little ball with a dark little line that looks like a belt. I imagine it is a baby star hiding and that everything around it is colorful smoke that it lights up itself.
