What you would seeLo que verías

At the center of a deep black background float two intertwined spiral galaxies, arranged diagonally. The larger, brighter galaxy on the lower left displays an oval core in pale creamy yellow, surrounded by sweeping spiral arms in shades of beige, pearly gray, and bright bluish speckles where young stars are forming. The slightly smaller, fainter galaxy on the right mirrors the spiral form with an elongated core and more diffuse arms, dotted with white-blue points that trace its structure. Between them, a faint hazy bridge of dust and light suggests gravitational interaction where the collision is underway. The surrounding darkness is speckled with tiny light sources: some are distant background galaxies in yellow or white, others are foreground stars with sharp cross-shaped diffraction spikes, notably a bright one at the upper right and a small orange one at the bottom. Light is soft and diffuse in the nuclei and sparkly at the outer edges. The texture is both ethereal and grainy, like illuminated cotton dusted with star powder, and the scale conveys immensity: two islands of billions of suns on the verge of merging.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the two bright cores, then follow the spiral arms toward the faint bridge where they appear to touch. Notice the contrast between the warm yellowish centers and the bluish edges sparkling with star formation. Look at the dark background and its tiny distant lights to sense the depth of space.

ContextContexto

The image shows Arp 272, the colliding pair NGC 6050 and IC 1179, part of the Hercules Galaxy Cluster in the constellation Hercules. It was taken by the NASA Hubble Space Telescope and released on April 24, 2008, credited to NASA, ESA, the Hubble Heritage Team and K. Noll. It is a scientific color photograph composed from astronomical observations. The two spirals are gravitationally interacting and will eventually merge, a common process in galaxy evolution. No further details about the specific exposure are provided in the source data.

Curious detailDato curioso

Arp 272 is listed in Halton Arp Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies and lies about 450 million light-years away; the light we see left the galaxies long before modern dinosaurs appeared on Earth.

The conservatorLa restauradora

As a restorer I focus on light and matter. I see two creamy, yellowish cores, soft like polished pearl, surrounded by arms in beige and pearly gray with bluish speckles where stars are born. Between them there is a faint hazy veil of dust connecting them. The deep black background is pristine, with no yellowed varnish. I know this is not paint but a composite scientific photograph from Hubble, dated April 24, 2008, and I think about how to preserve those nuances without adding anything extra.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

With my telescope I would never see it like this. What excites me is that these are two real spirals, NGC 6050 and IC 1179, forming Arp 272 in the Hercules Cluster. They are intertwined diagonally, tugging at each other with gravity, with pale oval cores and arms speckled in blue-white from young stars. Around them are background galaxies and stars with cross-shaped glare. Knowing Hubble captured them and that they will one day merge reminds me that the cosmos is alive and constantly in motion.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

They look like two cotton swirls with glitter hugging each other in the dark sky. The one on the left is bigger and glows like cream with little blue sparkles, the other follows it as if they were playing spin. Between them there is dusty light joining them together. Around them there are many tiny little lights, some shaped like pointy stars. I imagine that inside there live billions of suns and that they are dancing very slowly to become one single giant galaxy.
