A black-and-white, wide panoramic image taken from a steep top-down viewpoint just above the ground. The foreground is dominated by the Martian surface: an uneven, dusty and pebbly terrain with fine-grained soil, scattered small pebbles and a few flat, smooth-edged rocks. The texture is granular and matte, with short, crisp shadows suggesting intense, direct sunlight from one side. Across the top of the frame are mechanical elements of the lander: on the left, a landing leg with a circular footpad and a light-toned articulated strut or robotic arm with a cylindrical tube and a dark corrugated bellows at the joint; on the right, another landing hardware assembly with a crumpled, reflective thermal blanket partially lit. Near the top center a soft shadow cast by the spacecraft body falls onto the soil. No sky or horizon is visible, only the ground bounded by machinery. The sense of scale is intimate, as if the viewer hovers centimeters above the terrain. Contrast is strong between the smooth metals and the rough regolith. Fine specks, tiny furrows and slightly brighter patches where dust was disturbed during landing are discernible.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start at the mechanical edges on top, then move your gaze down to the regolith in the center. Notice the contrast between sleek metal and granular ground. Look for the shadow and the small displaced stones: they reveal the imprint of the landing.

The image is credited to NASA/JPL-Caltech/University of Arizona and is dated May 30, 2008, shortly after the Phoenix mission landing. It is listed as a photograph / scientific image in the Space and science category and comes from the NASA Image and Video Library with credit to NASA/JPL. Phoenix landed in the Martian north polar region to investigate the history of water and the habitability of the soil. Titled Mars Surface Beneath Phoenix, this view shows the terrain directly under the lander, captured by one of its downward-looking cameras. The date marks the early phase of surface operations. No additional details about exact time or specific instrument are given in the provided source.

Curious detailDato curioso

The Phoenix mission provided the first direct chemical proof of water ice on Mars when bright clumps uncovered by its thrusters vanished over several days as they sublimated.

From my perspective I focus on the contrast of textures revealed in this black and white image. I see the Martian regolith, grainy and matte, full of fine grains and scattered pebbles, against the smooth metals of the lander. I am drawn to the wrinkled thermal blanket and the articulated arm with its corrugated bellows, because they show folds, highlights and deep shadows shaped by intense light. It is a scientific photograph from 2008 that documents the terrain beneath Phoenix without altering it.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

As a sky enthusiast, this top-down view thrills me because it shows Mars just centimeters away. We are looking at the north polar ground on May 30, 2008, just days after the Phoenix landing. I can make out the dusty, stony terrain with flat rocks with soft edges, and above the lander legs with circular footpads and the metallic arm. There is no sky or horizon, just regolith and the spacecraft shadow. NASA lets us peek into another world with this image.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It feels like I am floating above Mars! I see dirt with tiny dust and little stones everywhere, like a giant yard with no plants. Up top there are robot legs with circle feet and a metal arm with a black accordion piece. On the right there is a wrinkly shiny blanket. Everything is in black and white and looks super close. The shadow of the robot falls on the ground. I imagine if I walked there I would kick up lots of Martian dust.
