What you would seeLo que verías
The image is a long panoramic mosaic split into five horizontal strips on a deep black background, forming a continuous map of the Milky Way seen edge-on. At the center of each strip stretches a luminous, speckled band ranging from pale blue to pinkish and intense red, dotted with thousands of bright points that are stars and clusters. The glow is densest and warmest toward the Galactic Center in the third strip, where a pale, diffuse bluish cloud expands above and below the plane, contrasting with the reddish tones of dust and gas. The top and bottom edges of each strip are jagged and zigzagged, a visible trace of the assembly of hundreds of thousands of photographs. At the top, grey lettering reads THE INFRARED MILKY WAY: GLIMPSE (3.6–8.0 microns) with the Spitzer Space Telescope logo in the corner. Below, graduated axes mark Galactic Latitude and Longitude in degrees. Small bright nebulae, bubbles and reddish filaments stand out like glowing gems amid the dark dust.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start at the bright blue center of the middle strip, the heart of the galaxy, then slowly scan toward the ends to see how the glow fades to darker tones. Pause on the small red and pink knots, stellar nurseries where stars are being born. Notice the jagged edges and the coordinate axes to understand this is not a single photo but a giant puzzle of infrared light.
ContextContexto
The piece is a mosaic made from more than 444,580 frames taken by NASA Spitzer Space Telescope, released on June 3, 2008 by the NASA/JPL-Caltech and University of Wisconsin team. It is part of the GLIMPSE project, which mapped the inner Milky Way in infrared light from 3.6 to 8.0 microns, invisible to the human eye but able to pierce interstellar dust. The portrait reveals intense star formation in the galactic plane and shows the structure of our galaxy from our interior vantage point. The poster design is credited to Thomas Robitaille and Robert Hurt, with credit to NASA/JPL.

Curious detailDato curioso
Spitzer, launched in 2003, could sense the heat of cold objects hidden behind dust, and this mosaic required stitching together more than 444,000 individual exposures to create one panoramic sky view.

- How does our idea of the Milky Way change when we see it in infrared instead of visible light?¿Cómo cambia nuestra idea de la Vía Láctea al verla en luz infrarroja en lugar de luz visible?
- What does it make you feel to see our galaxy as a thin, dusty ribbon rather than the typical spiral seen from outside?¿Qué te hace sentir ver nuestra galaxia como una franja delgada y polvorienta en vez de la típica espiral vista desde fuera?
- How does knowing it is a mosaic made of thousands of fragments affect how we understand scientific knowledge?¿De qué manera el hecho de que sea un mosaico hecho de miles de fragmentos influye en cómo entendemos el conocimiento científico?

The conservatorLa restauradora
Look at the jagged zigzag border that frames each strip of the mosaic. That irregularity is not a flaw, it is the trace of assembling more than 444,580 images from the Spitzer Space Telescope. As a conservator I am fascinated by how infrared light, between 3.6 and 8.0 microns, pierces the dust that blinds us in visible light and reveals the warm glow of the galactic center. The palette shifts from pale blue to intense red, colors assigned to translate the invisible and stabilize a fragile, continuous map.

We are seeing our home from the inside, edge-on, as if we were lying on the galactic plane. This panorama from the GLIMPSE project, published in 2008, joins five strips to show the entire Milky Way in infrared. Notice the third strip, where the center becomes denser and warmer, with a large bluish cloud expanding above and below the plane. The bright dots are thousands of stars and clusters, and the reddish filaments are dust and gas where new stars are forming furiously.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
It looks like a giant sparkly scarf someone hung in the darkness. It is full of glitter like confetti and has light blue parts and super red and pink parts. If you look closely you can see little bubbles and clouds shining like jewels. I like that on top there is a title in gray letters and at the bottom there are little numbers to measure where each thing is. It looks like they cut photos with zigzag scissors and pasted them to make this super long strip of stars.
