What you would seeLo que verías
A nadir satellite view of a river delta filling the entire frame, with no sky or horizon. Two broad, sinuous distributary channels of sediment-laden water run from north to south through the center, shifting in color from pale tan and soft yellow to lilac-gray and violet-blue where they mingle with the sea. Between and alongside them lie elongated, organic-shaped islands: the largest, in the south-central area, is teardrop-like and covers nearly a third of the image, its surface a mottled green patchwork of tiny fields, threadlike roads and darker clumps indicating dense vegetation. To the north, a long, narrow island shows a more uniform deep green. On both banks, the mainland is fragmented by countless meanders, creeks and thin channels that create a dark filigree over greens ranging from bright lime to moss and olive. In the lower part the water fans out toward the mouth, with swirling plumes of milky sediment, diffuse edges and very small islets and sandbanks barely emerging. The illumination is even and shadowless, typical of scientific imagery; textures contrast the granular, speckled land with the smooth, velvety flow of turbid water.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Follow the two main water branches from top to bottom and notice how their hue shifts from tan to violet near the ocean. Then focus on the central teardrop island and the hair-thin channels around it, where the interplay of inhabited land, water and vegetation becomes clear.
ContextContexto
This is an ASTER sub-scene, 54.5 by 60 kilometers in size, acquired on January 6, 2005 and released by NASA/JPL through its Photojournal. It shows the westernmost portion of the Ganges Delta, centered at 21.9 degrees north latitude, 88 degrees east longitude, where the Hugli River — branching off the Ganges about 300 kilometers to the north and flowing past Kolkata — empties into the Bay of Bengal. Light tan tones in the water indicate high sediment load, while deep green tones on some islands correspond to mangrove swamps, as noted in the source description. It is an Earth observation product for scientific purposes, credited to NASA/JPL and the U.S./Japan ASTER Science Team.

From my studio I love how this delta preserves every detail when seen from above. I notice the two wide winding arms carrying beige, pale yellow and grayish lilac sediments toward the violet blue of the sea. I pause on the central tear shaped island, with its green mosaic of fields and very fine roads, and on the deep greens of the mangroves. To the south the milky plumes and sandbanks reveal a landscape that is always shifting and that we must protect with care and respect.

As a sky watcher I love this zenithal view with no horizon or sky, captured by the ASTER sensor from space. I see a frame of 54.5 by 60 kilometers centered on the Hugli River, which splits from the Ganges about 300 kilometers to the north and passes Calcutta before fanning out into the Bay of Bengal. I notice the even light with no shadows, the filigree like meanders and the milky sediment swirls that only a satellite can reveal with such scientific clarity and beauty.

It looks like a giant drawing seen from an airplane! I see two big rivers in beige and lilac that hug each other and make a tear shaped island in the middle, like a huge drop. On the sides there are many little green paths in light and dark tones, and at the bottom the water makes white swirls like milk with chocolate. I love to imagine tiny boats sailing through the skinny channels and the little green fields.
