As a conservator I think about how hard it is to preserve such a minimalist image: the extreme contrast, the minimal sensor noise, that velvety background that must stay pure. There is no surface to retouch, only light captured from afar in July 2014. It is a simple and honest testimony of how we saw Pluto before the flyby.

It looks like someone placed two tiny sugar dots on a huge black piece of paper. The bigger one is Pluto and the tiny one right next to it is Charon, its moon. They are alone in the middle of all that darkness and there are only three super tiny stars around, one at the top left, one at the top right that shines brighter, and one down below. They have no colors or little faces, just white light. I like it because they look like two friends who never part and travel together through the huge black space.
