What you would seeLo que verías

This black-and-white image presents a backlit silhouette of a scientific instrument mounted on a mast. At the geometric center, the device faces the viewer head-on, with a bulky rectangular body draped in what appears to be a thermal blanket with a wrinkled texture and irregular edges. To the left of the main housing a dark cylindrical lens protrudes, one of the two stereoscopic camera eyes; to the right a complementary housing with connectors and cabling is visible. The base rests on an articulated metallic support with thin legs and visible brackets that lift it above the lander deck. In the lower left corner a flat metallic bar intrudes into the frame, part of the lander structure or robotic arm. The background is a smooth, luminous Martian sky, almost cloudless, with strong sunlight entering from the upper right corner and creating a flare and faint vertical banding of diffused light. Contrast is high: the instrument is in deep shadow, almost pure black, sharply outlined against the bright sky. This emphasizes its industrial contour and compact scale, only a few centimeters in height, yet monumental within the emptiness of the composition. Fine dust and subtle gradients in the sky give a sense of thin atmosphere.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start by tracing the dark central silhouette and distinguishing its two cylindrical eyes. Then let the sunlight flare in the upper right reveal the veil of dust in the air. Finally notice the wrinkles in the thermal covering that give the machine a tactile quality.

ContextContexto

The image was catalogued on October 3, 2008 in the NASA Image and Video Library and credited to NASA/JPL-Caltech/University of Arizona/Max Planck Institute, under the JPL department. It shows the Surface Stereo Imager (SSI), the primary stereoscopic camera of the Phoenix lander that operated in the Martian north polar region in 2008. Mounted on an elevated mast, this two-eyed camera documented the landing site, weather, and robotic arm operations. The photograph was taken on Mars as a technical self-portrait or health check of the instrument, a common practice in planetary missions. The source data do not provide additional details about the exact Martian local time or imaging sequence.

Curious detailDato curioso

The Surface Stereo Imager could capture stereo and color-filtered images to build 360-degree panoramas and was instrumental in confirming water ice exposed by Phoenix’s robotic arm.

I focus on the wrinkled thermal blanket covering the rectangular body. That irregular texture is not carelessness, it is protection. I see the dark cylinder on the left, one of the two eyes of this stereo camera, and the articulated metal mount holding it above the deck. The backlight leaves it almost black, cut out against the bright sky. I am struck by how it documents itself on Mars, checking its own condition. The solar flare in the upper right corner and the bands of light reveal the wear of extreme light and the dust that covers everything.

This is the portrait of the Phoenix Surface Stereo Imager, photographed head-on atop its mast at the Martian north pole in 2008. What looks monumental is actually compact, just a few centimeters tall, but raised high to survey the landscape. Its two cameras gave it 3D vision to study the terrain, the weather and the work of the robotic arm. The black and white image, backlit against a smooth sky with the sun entering from the upper right, is typical of the technical checkups missions perform to confirm everything is still in place.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a spy robot with one big eye on the left staring at us. It is all dark like a shadow because the Martian sun shines from behind and leaves it outlined. Its wrinkly little blanket looks like crumpled aluminum foil and it stands on skinny metal legs. Below we can see a flat bar that is part of its spacecraft. I imagine it took a selfie on Mars to say hi, I am here, and the sun made a huge glare that crosses the whole picture.
