As a conservator I am fascinated by the contrast of textures in this black-and-white Cassini capture from July 20, 2010. Look at the F ring band: a sharp luminous cord wrapped in a diffuse halo like suspended dust, almost silky. Beside it, the fragment of the main rings shows parallel gray bands of different density. And all of it against a velvety black background sprinkled with stars. Preserving this balance between the sharpness of the ring and the delicacy of the halo means preserving the memory of the mission.

What excites me is pure serendipity. Cassini was targeting Saturn's thin F ring, that bright line crossing diagonally, and without planning it also caught a globular cluster. Down there, to the left of center, you see that dense swarm of tiny white dots against the void. For years this spacecraft orbited Saturn between 2004 and 2017 and gave us gems like this. This image is science and luck at once: studying a nearby ring and, at the same time, glimpsing extremely distant stars in the same frame.

It looks like a shiny highway in space! The F ring line crosses as if someone drew with white chalk and then smudged it a little leaving dusty powder around it. And down in the corner, you see more gray little stripes that are part of Saturn's big rings. The prettiest part is the black background full of dots: there are so many stars! And there is a place where a bunch are clustered together, like piled-up frost. It feels like the ring is traveling among fireflies.
