What you would seeLo que verías
The image fills the frame edge to edge, like an open window onto deep space. At the center lies an irregular, glowing cavity, with translucent clouds in brick red, pale orange and ivory that look like smoke lit from within. Around it, greenish and yellowish filaments form an almost complete ring, spongy in texture with frayed, wispy edges, resembling a cosmic garland. The background is a black velvet field speckled with thousands of light dots: tiny stars in white, electric blue and turquoise, some brighter with a soft halo. Light does not come from a single sun but from the nebulosity itself and the collective shine of stars, with high contrast between the darkness of the void and the incandescent patches. There are no solid objects in the visual foreground; everything is gas and dust on an immense scale, yet a sense of depth emerges because the reddish central layers appear denser and closer, while the greenish outer veils fade and diffuse. Looked at slowly, dark clumps like soot veins can be seen interwoven with bright filaments, and small bluish star clusters dot the rim, especially toward the left and lower edge.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start at the reddish core in the middle and trace outward along the greenish ring that encircles it. Notice how pale filaments draw an almost circular but broken, organic shape. Pause on the intense blue points along the rim — young stars whose crisp shine contrasts with the soft glow of the cloud.
ContextContexto
This is a mosaic of the Soul Nebula, assembled from data from NASA WISE space telescope and dated April 5, 2010, credited to NASA/JPL-Caltech/UCLA. According to the source description, it shows an open star cluster surrounded by a cloud of dust and gas about 6,500 light-years from Earth in the constellation Cassiopeia, near the Heart Nebula. WISE surveyed the sky in infrared light, allowing it to peer through dust and highlight structures that remain hidden in visible light. The colors are not what the human eye would see directly, but a scientific translation to distinguish different infrared wavelengths and components of interstellar material.

Curious detailDato curioso
WISE, launched in December 2009, mapped the entire sky in four infrared bands and catalogued hundreds of millions of objects; this view uses those data to reveal the warm dust of the nebula.

This mosaic is not a painting but a translation of light. It was built from infrared data from the WISE telescope in 2010 and what we see are layers of gas and dust turned into color to be understood. I am interested in how the reds and oranges at the center mark the densest areas, while the greenish veils of the ring look frayed. There is no frame or border, everything is diffuse material. My job would be to explain that those dark clumps are not stains but cold dust that infrared lets us see.

When I look at this window toward Cassiopeia I think about the 6,500 light years between us and the Soul Nebula. What shines is not a single sun but an open cluster of young stars inside their birth cloud. WISE captured it in infrared and that is why those greenish and yellowish filaments stand out so much; they shine through dust that would hide everything in visible light. The reddish central cavity is gas lit from within. I love hunting for those electric blue dots, they are newborn stars.

It looks like a giant smoke ring floating in blackness. In the middle there is a cave of red and orange light as if someone turned on a lamp inside a cloud. Around it there is a fluffy green garland with spikes and little hairs. And everything is full of white and blue sparkles, like scattered glitter. There is no ground or anything solid, just clouds that get lighter or darker. If you stare a lot you feel like you are going to fall inside.
