On the right, the cavity is larger and is crowned by an intensely bright white and peach-colored knot, with smaller orange glows around it; on the left, two adjoining reddish hollows are separated by a narrow bridge of brighter cloud. Thousands of tiny stars speckle the entire field, mostly icy blue and white pinpoints, with a few warmer orange and red dots, including a noticeable orange star near the top center. The black background is not uniformly black: it shifts toward deep blue and green where thin veils of gas drift across it. These emerald greens and wine reds are not real paint, they are assigned colors to translate the infrared light captured by NASA's WISE telescope on May 24, 2010. I look at the fibrous, torn edges like foam and think about layers of cold dust overlapping. My job would be to imagine how to preserve that information without inventing anything, respecting that every faint veil and every bright knot is scientific data turned into an image.

What excites me is that I am seeing two giant stellar nurseries, the Heart and Soul nebulae, photographed diagonally by WISE. Those dark reddish cavities are hollows carved by newborn stars in interstellar dust. The whitish peach-colored knot on the right is a cluster where suns are being born. And that small elongated whitish-blue smudge at the bottom right is also there, tiny against the immensity. All sprinkled with thousands of ice-blue, white and orange stars. Pure infrared light made visible.

They look like two giant bubbles in the sky that someone blew and they popped a little bit. The one on the right is bigger and has a super bright pearl on top that shines a lot, like a treasure. The one on the left has two little red holes separated by a tiny cloud bridge. Everything is full of little blue and white sparkles, like glitter, and there is a lonely orange star at the top. I like that the black background is not really black, it is like blue and green with colorful smoke.
