Against a deep, uniform black background evoking the void of space, a circular diagram is positioned slightly to the right of center, seen from a top-down, slightly tilted perspective. The diagram consists of several concentric dashed rings in thin pale lines, suggesting planetary orbits around a dark central point. Two large, bright white fan-shaped wedges spread out toward the left and downward, made of thousands of tiny, densely packed white dots that thin out toward the outer edges. Near the center, a smaller, elongated curved cluster of red and green dots gathers close to the sun, like a nearby swarm. A few isolated yellow and pale blue dots speckle the periphery. The texture is granular and digital, typical of a scientific visualization, with stark contrast between brilliant white and absolute black. The scale conveys immensity, with the inner solar system compressed into a few centimeters compared to the expansive cloud of asteroids. Subtle gaps and denser filaments within the white fans give a sense of structure and motion across the sky survey.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the two dominant white fans that anchor the composition, then move inward to the small red and green concentration at the core. Notice how dot density fades outward and how the dashed orbit rings bring order to the apparent scatter. Look for the lone dots floating outside the fans — they are among the most intriguing finds.

ContextContexto

The image, titled «Scanning for Asteroids and Comets» and dated May 25, 2010, shows asteroids observed up to that time by NASA Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer, or WISE, according to data from the NASA Image and Video Library credited to NASA/JPL-Caltech/ULCA/JHU. Launched in December 2009, WISE surveyed the entire sky in infrared light to detect near-Earth objects, main-belt asteroids, comets and other cool bodies. The visualization presents its detections in a polar view of the solar system. The source does not specify what each color codes for, but they likely distinguish different object populations. No further anecdotal details are given in the source record.

Curious detailDato curioso

In its first months of operation, the WISE mission discovered more than 33,000 new asteroids, and this graphic was one of the earliest public visualizations of the scale of its infrared census.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. How does seeing the solar system as a cloud of dots rather than isolated planets affect your perception?¿Qué te hace sentir ver el sistema solar como una nube de puntos en lugar de como planetas aislados?
  2. How does the sheer number of small objects change your idea of empty space?¿Cómo cambia tu idea de vacío espacial al ver cuántos objetos pequeños lo pueblan?
  3. What advantages might infrared observation have over visible light for finding dark asteroids?¿Qué ventajas crees que tiene observar el cielo en infrarrojo en vez de en luz visible para encontrar asteroides?

The conservatorLa restauradora

As a restorer I notice the visual fragility of this digital piece. The absolute black background is not empty, it is a support that must stay uniform so the tiny white, red and green dots do not get lost. I look at the very fine dotted lines that form the orbital rings: they are delicate and high contrast. The granular cloud of white dots in a double fan shape requires precise brightness calibration, because any shift would make the subtle scattering toward the outer edges disappear.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

What excites me here is recognizing the work of WISE, launched in December 2009, mapping the sky in infrared. This top-down view of the solar system from May 25, 2010 lets me see what our eyes cannot capture. Those two huge white fans are thousands of tightly packed detections, and near the center that elongated swarm of red and green dots must be a population close to the sun. It reminds me how much remains to be cataloged in our own cosmic neighborhood.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like someone threw white glitter on a black sheet of paper and made two giant fairy wings. There are so many little dots packed together that they shine brightly and then spread apart like when you blow bubbles. In the middle there are dotted rings like roads for planets and a little worm made of red and green dots huddled together. There are also lonely yellow and light blue dots, like they are lost. I like to think each dot is a little space rock traveling.

  1. #1

If you look at the background of the image, what color is the emptiness of space that holds the whole diagram?

    HintPista

It is the darkest color possible, like a sheet with no light where the white dots shine.

  2. #2

In the center right there are several rings made in a special way, what are those lines that form the orbits like?

    HintPista

They are not solid lines, but a sequence of light little dots circling the dark center.

  3. #3

Near the center of the diagram there is a small elongated curved cluster of dots in two striking colors, what colors are they?
