What you would seeLo que verías

At the center of a black field dotted with hundreds of luminous points floats a large, irregular cloud with an ethereal, semi-transparent appearance. The composition is dominated by this diagonal nebula, denser and brighter at its core, where a golden-yellow glow near white fades into emerald greens, ochres and smoky browns toward the edges. In and around the cloud are pinpoint stars of intense electric blue, some with a faint halo, others tiny like diamond dust on dark velvet. The background is the void of space, a deep black that is not uniform but crossed by faint greenish veils and filaments suggesting cosmic dust. Visually in the foreground, two very bright whitish cores anchor the cloud, while the rest unfurls upward and sideways in capricious shapes resembling illuminated smoke or diluted watercolor. Light seems to radiate from within the cloud itself, creating soft contrasts. The overall texture is both grainy from the stars and silky in the gaseous areas. There is no human scale; everything suggests immensity. Small details, such as clusters of blue stars on the right margin or faint reddish filaments near the golden center, only emerge upon careful looking.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start at the golden heart of the cloud and follow its glow toward the diffuse greenish edges. Then shift your gaze to the black background to count the tiny blue points and notice how some are wrapped in the veil. Finally observe the faint dark filaments contrasting with the brightness: there the dust revealed by WISE becomes visible.

ContextContexto

The image, titled Seven Sisters Get WISE and dated July 16, 2010, comes from the NASA Image and Video Library, credited to NASA/JPL-Caltech/UCLA. It was captured by the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer space telescope, known as WISE, launched in 2009 to map the sky in infrared light. It shows the famous Pleiades star cluster, also called the Seven Sisters, located in the constellation Taurus. According to the source description, it is an open cluster: a group of young stars loosely bound by gravity that will eventually drift apart. The infrared view reveals dust surrounding the stars, invisible in ordinary visible light, with colors artificially assigned to represent different wavelengths.

Curious detailDato curioso

WISE surveyed the entire sky in infrared with sensitivity hundreds of times greater than its predecessors and discovered millions of objects hidden by dust, including brown dwarfs and near-Earth asteroids.

The conservatorLa restauradora

I pause on how infrared light makes visible what the eye cannot see, that dust WISE translates into green and ochre veils around the almost white yellow at the center. As a conservator I think in layers, in how the deep black is not uniform but like an old varnish with greenish filaments and electric blue speckles peeking through. The nebula reads like diluted watercolor, silky and ethereal yet anchored by two luminous cores. I am struck that the colors are not natural but assigned to distinguish wavelengths, a technical choice that is also poetic.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

Through my backyard telescope I never see the Seven Sisters of Taurus like this, and that is exactly why this 2010 image excites me. WISE, launched in 2009, shows us in infrared the dust wrapping this open cluster of young stars that will one day drift apart. The intense electric blue dots are the Pleiades, and the golden yellow with emerald green is illuminated dust, not gas glowing on its own. I recognize the ethereal diagonal in the void, the soft halos and that cosmic dust that goes unnoticed in visible light but here becomes the immense protagonist.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a magic cloud floating in darkness, as if someone blew colored smoke onto black velvet. In the middle it shines a lot, like melted gold turning green and light brown at the edges. There are little blue stars, some big with light around them and others tiny like scattered little diamonds. If you look closely you see two very bright whitish dots holding up the cloud and some hidden reddish threads. I like to imagine it is a giant watercolor someone painted in space that never ends.
