What you would seeLo que verías

The piece is a vertical stack of five rectangular maps arranged in a single column against a white background, one for each moon. Each map shows a spherical surface unfolded in a cylindrical projection, with irregular upper edges where the north pole is cut away in black, and side edges that stitch the curvature from 0° to 360° longitude. From top to bottom the names MIMAS, ENCELADUS, TETHYS, DIONE and RHEA appear in small black sans-serif type. The surfaces appear in very pale tones — pearly grays, off-white, faint bluish and greenish yellows — with subtle variations that reveal craters, fractures and icy plains. Mimas displays its large Herschel crater as a light, rugged depression near the center. Enceladus shows bluish grooves toward the southern pole. Tethys presents a diffuse yellowish stain on its left hemisphere and a large basin on the right. Dione combines a dark leading side and a bright trailing side. Rhea appears mottled with pale, interwoven streaks. The overall texture resembles plaster photographed under grazing light, with soft shadows enhancing the topography and a slightly glossy, frozen quality.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Scan the column top to bottom, comparing brightness and hue from one world to the next; the contrast between hemispheres tells a geological story. Linger on the faint shifts from blue to yellow where enhanced color exposes purer ice, fractures or altered material. Notice how the edges stitch a sphere into a rectangle, leaving the poles as dark, incomplete zones.

ContextContexto

This is a set of enhanced-color maps created from data obtained by NASA's Cassini spacecraft, as described by the NASA Image and Video Library, credited to NASA/JPL/SSI/LPI and dated 2010-10-07. The five bodies — Mimas, Enceladus, Tethys, Dione and Rhea — are icy inner moons of Saturn, whose surfaces are dominated by water ice. Enhanced color does not replicate natural human vision but is a processing technique that accentuates subtle compositional and textural differences for scientific study. The Cassini-Huygens mission orbited Saturn from 2004 to 2017 and systematically mapped these satellites.

Curious detailDato curioso

The strong bluish tint visible at the south pole of Enceladus marks the tiger stripe region, active fractures where Cassini detected jets of water vapor venting from a subsurface ocean.

The conservatorLa restauradora

I focus on how this set is built: five rectangles in a column on a white background, each a cylindrical projection with the poles cut in black and the 0° and 360° edges stitched together. The pale tones — pearly grays, beige, light blue and greenish yellows — are not natural, they are enhanced color to reveal ice differences. I notice a plaster-like texture with grazing light: there craters, cracks and icy plains become visible.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

What excites me is that this comes from Cassini, which orbited Saturn between 2004 and 2017 and in 2010 gave us these maps. They are Mimas, Enceladus, Tethys, Dione and Rhea, all icy moons made of water ice. Each strip is its world unfolded. Look for Mimas with its huge Herschel crater, Enceladus with bluish grooves to the south, Tethys with its yellowish patch, Dione half bright half dark and Rhea all mottled.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

They look like five long scarves hanging one under the other, but they are moons! Each one has its name written on top in black. The first one has a big circle like a footprint, the second has little blue stripes at the bottom, another has a yellow stain as if it got mustard on it. They are white and gray because they are made of ice, like dirty snowballs in space. My favorite is the one that looks like it has a blue band-aid.
