What you would seeLo que verías
The square image shows a dark, dense star field, almost black in the deepest areas, scattered with hundreds of small blue and white points of varying brightness. In the lower right-center, the main feature dominates: a large, incomplete shell or bubble, darker inside than its edges. Its upper rim curves in pink, magenta, and muted red; its lower left glows in intense turquoise and cyan; and its right side turns yellowish-green, as if the ring were made of thin, frayed smoke. Wisps escape from its bottom and fade into the background. In the lower right corner, a very bright blue star produces a sharp four-pointed cross of light, the most intense point in the composition. Around the shell spread diffuse clouds in dark green, olive, and teal, with a grainy, almost painterly texture. In the upper left there is a reddish-orange smudge with a blue star inside it; near the top center, a creamy white-yellow glow is ringed by green halo. There are no people, text, or visible scale references: the sense of size comes only from the contrast between the tiny stars and the vast, translucent cloud.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the bright blue star in the lower right and then move toward the faint ring beside it: the real subject is that dim shell, not the star. Trace its upper pink arc and its lower turquoise arc and notice how incomplete and frayed it looks. Finally, look at the clouds in the upper left to sense that the explosion is not happening in an empty void.
ContextContexto
According to the source data, this image is titled *An Explosion of Infrared Color*, was credited to NASA/JPL-Caltech/UCLA, and was released on December 9, 2010. It shows IC 443, a supernova remnant also known as the Jellyfish Nebula, as observed by NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE). The source highlights its value for studying how stellar explosions interact with their surroundings. Because this is infrared, the colors are a scientific translation of radiation the human eye cannot see, not the object's visible appearance. The source does not state its distance or the exact age of the explosion, so those details are not given here.
Certainty of this context: high. Written by an AI model (muse-wonder-1.0) looking at the image and the source record; when in doubt, trust the source.Certeza de este contexto: alta. Curious detailDato curioso
IC 443 is nicknamed the Jellyfish Nebula for its shape: in this image the rounded shell and the wisps drifting from its lower edge faintly suggest a bell and trailing tentacles.
Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse
- How does your reading of the image change when you learn that these colors translate invisible infrared light rather than showing what an eye would see?¿Cómo cambia tu lectura de la imagen al saber que estos colores traducen luz infrarroja invisible y no lo que vería un ojo humano?
- Why do you think an expanding shell left by a stellar explosion can look fragile, almost like smoke or fabric?¿Por qué crees que la cáscara en expansión dejada por una explosión estelar puede parecer tan frágil, casi como humo o tela?
- If you removed the bright star in the lower right, would the nebula feel nearer, farther away, or simply lonelier?

What fascinates me is how this image translates the invisible. WISE captures infrared light and here we see it turned into cyan, magenta, olive green and pink. Look at the large shell of the IC 443 remnant: its edge looks like frayed smoke, darker inside than outside. Every swirl and grainy texture is gas and dust. These are not its true colors in visible light, but a scientific translation that lets us study it and also feel wonder.

This is IC 443, the Jellyfish Nebula, photographed by NASA's WISE telescope and released on December 9, 2010. What we see is the leftover of a star that exploded. The incomplete bubble with pink, turquoise and green edges is the shock wave crashing into its surroundings. I love spotting the blue star in the lower right corner with its four-pointed cross, the brightest of all, and the hundreds of tiny white and blue dots scattered around.

It looks like a giant soap bubble that popped in space. It is black inside and outside it has colors like pink, lime green and turquoise, all like soft smoke. At the bottom right there is a star that shines super bright and makes a cross with four sharp points. At the top there is another little blue star inside a small orange cloud. I like to imagine it is a huge jellyfish floating among lots of tiny sparkles.
