At the center of a deep black field sprinkled with tiny stars, a nearly face-on spiral galaxy unfolds like a swirled, luminous spider web. Its core is an intense, almost overexposed oval of whitish pink and lavender light, with faint, diffuse tendrils radiating outward. Surrounding it, the spiral arms are not solid bands but a delicate, lace-like network of filaments and clumps. Muted emerald and mossy greens dominate the web, interwoven with compact golden, yellow, and orange knots and scattered cyan-blue sparkles that punctuate the structure. The texture looks both gaseous and grainy, like illuminated dust mixed with foam. Visually, the brilliant nucleus anchors the foreground, while the background remains a velvety void dotted with sharp foreground stars, including a prominent bright blue star with diffraction spikes just below the galactic disk and a few smaller blue and warm-toned stars near the upper left edge. Dark gaps between the threads give a sense of depth and fragility, and the outer edges fade softly into blackness, emphasizing the intricate, three-dimensional quality of the star-forming pattern.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start at the bright central glow, then trace the lacy green filaments and golden knots outward along the uneven spiral arms. Notice the dark voids that create depth, then look for the contrasting blue and warm points that mark active star-forming regions.

ContextContexto

This is an infrared view of galaxy IC 342 taken by NASA Spitzer Space Telescope and released on July 20, 2011, credited to NASA/JPL-Caltech. The source description notes its spider-web-like spiral pattern of dust and the especially bright infrared glow at the very center. IC 342 is a nearby spiral galaxy that is hard to study in visible light because it lies behind the dusty plane of our own Milky Way; infrared imaging helps reveal its star-forming structure. No further specific measurements or historical details are provided in the source.

Curious detailDato curioso

Spitzer detected infrared light invisible to human eyes, so the greens, yellows, and blues here are false colors assigned by scientists to make warm dust and star formation visible.

The conservatorLa restauradora

What moves me most is that fragile texture, like illuminated dust or foam suspended in emptiness. I see an oval core, almost whitish with pinkish tints, very bright, surrounded by a web of green and emerald threads dotted with golden and yellow points. As a conservator I think in layers: infrared reveals what the dust of our own Milky Way hides in visible light. Each filament is a luminous scar, a delicate weaving that asks to be read with care and wonder.

This is IC 342 seen in infrared by the Spitzer telescope, released in 2011 by NASA and JPL-Caltech. We see it almost face-on, with a bright core and patchy arms that are not solid but a spiderweb of clumps where stars are born. I love how green traces the dust and the golden and cyan-blue dots are young clusters. Usually hidden behind the dusty plane of our Milky Way, infrared unveils it. It is a window into invisible light our eyes could never capture alone.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a giant spiderweb spinning in space! In the middle there is a super bright white light with a touch of pink, like a magic lamp. Around it everything is green with golden and blue sparkles, like glitter floating. There are dark little gaps between the threads and that makes it look soft and fluffy. Below there is a very bright blue star that looks like an earring. I imagine if you touched it it would tickle because it is made of star dust.
