What you would seeLo que verías

The image is a wide, horizontal view of deep space, almost completely filled with stars over a black background tinged with very dark red, especially toward the edges. At the center sits a bright white star with a subtle cross-shaped glint, the visual anchor of the scene. Around it spreads an irregular cloud, wider than it is tall, with two lobes extending left and right in a shape suggestive of a bow tie or dumbbell. The core glows green and yellow-green, while the lobes shift into mottled gold, orange, copper, and rust tones, as if made of fine smoke, filaments, and cosmic dust. A larger, fainter, more transparent halo in burgundy and dark red surrounds that bright body and gradually dissolves into darkness. The texture is grainy and vaporous, without sharp edges, dotted with tiny bright knots. Hundreds of stars in white, cyan, and pale blue sparkle in the foreground and background; some are mere pinpoints, others are larger with small rays. Looking slowly, one notices faint clusters, an isolated reddish point near the bottom, and how the cloud's density changes: compact and luminous at the center, fragile and frayed toward its edges. No human figures, text, or scale references appear.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First find the bright star at the center, then let your eyes follow the two lobes spreading left and right. Notice how the dense green-and-gold core dissolves into a fainter, more fragmented red halo. Finally, compare the nebula's soft glow with the sharp points of the surrounding stars.

ContextContexto

According to the source, this image was released on August 10, 2011, and credited to NASA/JPL-Caltech/Harvard-Smithsonian CfA. It was captured by NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope and shows infrared light from the Dumbbell Nebula, also known as Messier 27. Despite their name, planetary nebulae are not planets: they are the remains of stars that once resembled the Sun. As such a star reaches the end of its life, it sheds its outer layers of gas and dust into space. The specific observation and processing details are not included in the source record.

Curious detailDato curioso

Despite being called a 'planetary nebula,' this object has nothing to do with planets: the historical name comes from the round, planet-like appearance these nebulae had through early telescopes.

The conservatorLa restauradora

I pause to see how this borderless cloud holds together. The compact center in green and yellow-green looks varnished and dense, while the golden and copper lobes fray like fine smoke over a black background tinted with very dark red. That faint wine-colored halo feels like thin glazes dissolving outward. The white star with its cross-like glint anchors everything and reminds me how fragile matter is between dust and infrared light.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

What draws me in is the dumbbell or bow-tie shape, wider than tall, with two side lobes and a bright core. I learned that despite the name planetary nebula it is not a planet, but the remains of a Sun-like star that shed its outer layers. This panoramic infrared view from Spitzer, published in 2011, shows gas and dust in false color and hundreds of white and pale blue stars scattered like pins.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a giant butterfly made of shiny smoke floating in the dark. In the middle there is a white star with little cross sparkles that feels like its heart. The center is green and yellow and then it turns gold and orange like toasted bread. Around it there is a wine-red halo that fades away. If you count, you see so many tiny white and light blue stars, and down below a hidden reddish dot that I love to find.
