What you would seeLo que verías

The image is a vertical triptych showing the same region of the sky as seen by the Spitzer Space Telescope. The left panel presents the raw observation: a deep star field with diffuse nebulae in emerald green, orange-red and bright yellow against a black-blue background speckled with thousands of white and cyan stellar points. At the upper right three luminous yellow and reddish cores surrounded by greenish halos stand out, while across the centre and lower area large irregular clouds stretch with filamentary edges and bright rims suggesting gas and dust. The middle panel overlays semi-transparent whitish and grey outlines revealing dozens of bubbles of varying sizes, from tiny rings to a huge ellipse at the lower right and a thick ring at the lower left, like ghostly soap bubbles. The right panel is cleaner and marks those same bubbles with white and translucent grey circles of varying thickness, precisely indicating their location and scale over the original cosmic background.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the left panel and follow the colours: green and red trace dust and gas heated by stars. Then move to the centre to see how bubbles emerge that are easily confused with background haze, and finish on the right panel noticing how the white circles make giant structures visible that before looked like mere fog.

ContextContexto

The image, dated March 8, 2012 and credited to NASA/JPL-Caltech/Oxford University, comes from NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope. According to source data, a team of volunteers from the general public pored over Spitzer observations and discovered more than 5,000 bubbles in the disk of our Milky Way galaxy. These bubbles are structures blown by winds and radiation from massive stars. The triptych compares the original infrared view with two annotated versions to visualize the citizen-science catalogue. It is an example of citizen science applied to infrared astronomy.

Curious detailDato curioso

The project behind this image, the Milky Way Project, enabled tens of thousands of volunteers to catalogue bubbles in Spitzer data, doubling the number of known bubbles at the time.

What fascinates me about this triptych is how it preserves traces of time and collective work. On the left I see the original Spitzer infrared capture, with its emerald greens, orange reds and luminous yellows against a bluish black background. In the center and on the right the white and gray circles marking the bubbles appear. It is a delicate document: dust, gas and starlight recorded on March 8, 2012 that we now preserve as testimony of citizen-powered exploration.

For me this triptych is an invitation to observe patiently. The left panel shows the Milky Way in infrared, full of diffuse nebulae and thousands of white and cyan stars. In the center dozens of ghostly bubbles emerge, from small rings to a huge ellipse at the bottom right. On the right everything becomes clear with precise circles. It thrills me to know that volunteers like me helped catalog more than 5,000 bubbles formed by winds and radiation from massive stars.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a game of finding soap bubbles in space! In the first image I see lots of little stars and green, red and yellow clouds glowing in the darkness. In the second one whitish ghosts appear around the clouds and in the third they are marked with little white and gray circles. I like counting the bubbles and seeing there is a giant one at the bottom right and another with a thick rim on the left. It is like popping bubbles without getting wet!

It is a very large number, in the thousands, mentioned in the context about the collective discovery.

  2. #2

In the left panel, what three bright colors form the diffuse nebulae against the bluish black background?

    HintPista

Look for the tones described in what is seen: a jewel green, a warm red and a luminous yellow.

In the triptych, what shape stands out in the lower right area and what other thick-rimmed shape is seen at the bottom left?

    HintPista

Look at the center and right panels: they are two of the largest bubbles marked with white circles.
