Four circular cutouts of galaxies float on a deep black background, each outlined by a thin luminous rim. At the upper left, a galaxy labeled NGC 300 appears as an irregular bluish-white swirl with pinkish speckles at its core and scattered bright stars, accompanied by the text Younger Galaxies in pale blue. At the upper right, NGC 1316 looks like a diffuse yellowish sphere with a bright nucleus and a golden halo, marked Older Galaxies in coppery brown. Below, two larger circles show transitional galaxies. NGC 1291 on the left features an intense yellow core surrounded by reddish concentric rings and an outer necklace of electric-blue dots, like beads of light. M90 / NGC 4569 on the right is elongated and tilted, with a pinkish core and streaky dark dust lanes. Thick curved arrows in gradients of bluish-green and orange-yellow link the stages from young to transitional and from transitional to old. At the bottom, the captions Transitional Galaxy Populations and the GALEX Galaxy Evolution Explorer logo appear with a color bar fading from yellow to violet.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Follow the arrows first to read the story from young to old. Then pause on the blue rings of NGC 1291 and the contrast between its warm center and cool outskirts. Notice how color encodes stellar age: blue for recent star formation, gold for older populations.

ContextContexto

This is an educational science graphic released on 14 November 2007 by NASA/JPL-Caltech, with data from CTIO, Las Campanas and Palomar, as part of the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) mission. According to the source description, evidence from GALEX supports the long-held idea that many galaxies begin as smaller spirals before transforming into larger elliptical galaxies. The layout brings together four examples: NGC 300 as a young galaxy, NGC 1291 and M90/NGC 4569 as transitional cases, and NGC 1316 as an older, larger galaxy. It is an illustrative composite that combines photography and processed imaging to explain galaxy evolution, not a single direct observation.

Curious detailDato curioso

The GALEX mission, launched in 2003, surveyed the sky in ultraviolet light invisible to the human eye, making it possible to spot hot, young stars that glow in vivid blue, such as those forming the rings of NGC 1291.

I focus on the materials and assembly of this educational image. Against a deep black that acts like a void, four circles float, each framed by a very thin luminous ring that visually protects them. At the top I see NGC 300 as a whitish blue swirl with pink speckles, and NGC 1316 as a diffuse yellowish golden sphere. Below, the two transitional cases fascinate me: NGC 1291 with its intense yellow core, reddish rings and necklace of electric blue dots, and M90 with its streaky dark dust, all stitched together by gradient arrows.

This chart excites me because it tells the life story of galaxies as a narrative. Using data from NASA GALEX explorer from 2007, it suggests many galaxies are born small and spiral like NGC 300 at the top left, and over time become large ellipticals like NGC 1316 at the top right. In the middle are the teenagers: NGC 1291 with its blue ring of new stars and M90 with dusty streaks. The thick curved arrows in teal blue and orange guide us from young to old, making evolution visible at a glance.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

They look like four bubble planets floating in darkness. The top left one, NGC 300, is light blue with sparkles and pink dots like confetti. The top right one, NGC 1316, is a yellow ball like a shiny cookie. My favorites are at the bottom: NGC 1291 has a yellow center, then red rings and a necklace of electric blue lights that looks like a bracelet, and M90 is stretched out with dark smudges. There are big colorful arrows connecting the bubbles like a path you can follow.
