What you would seeLo que verías
The image shows a dark star field dotted with luminous points in reddish and orange tones against a deep black background. At the center a solid black circular disk blocks the bright nucleus of the object, an instrumental mask from the Spitzer telescope. Around this disk a diffuse glow expands as a halo or cloud: the comet coma, with gradients ranging from intense yellow and near-white close to the center to burning orange and dark red toward the edges. The cloud is not uniform; it displays faint filaments, clumps and a grainy texture, like embers in darkness. A thin horizontal black band crosses the entire image from side to side, interrupted only by the central disk; it is an artifact of the detector support. In the corners and surroundings background stars appear, some sharp and point-like, others more diffuse with reddish halos. In the lower left area two particularly bright orange sources stand out. The scale suggests vastness and faint activity in the vacuum. The palette is warm and dramatic, with high contrast between light and dark, and a sense of heat emanating from cold space.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the central black disk and let your gaze expand to the luminous halo surrounding it. Notice how color shifts from central yellow to deep red at the edges and look for small clumps that reveal dust and gas. Finally follow the horizontal band and peripheral stars to distinguish what belongs to the comet and what is an instrumental artifact.
ContextContexto
According to source data from the NASA Image and Video Library, this image was taken with the Spitzer Space Telescope and released on September 10, 2013, credited to NASA/JPL-Caltech/DLR/NAU. The description states it helped reveal that what was thought to be a large asteroid called Don Quixote is in fact a comet, by showing its coma and tail. Don Quixote had been classified since its discovery in 1983 as a near-Earth asteroid. Spitzer infrared observations detected faint, extended emission consistent with cometary activity. The technique is listed as photography / scientific imagery from the JPL department, in the Space and science category.

Curious detailDato curioso
The object 3552 Don Quixote, about 19 kilometers across, is one of the largest known short-period comets and its activity is extremely faint, so it could only be confirmed with Spitzer infrared observations.

Look closely and you will see this is not just a pretty space picture, it is a trace of infrared light. At the center a black disk blocks the brightest part so we can see the faint glow around it. That yellow and orange haze is the coma, dust and gas that Don Quijote was shedding without us noticing since 1983. As a restorer I love how Spitzer revealed the invisible: filaments, clumps and a reddish halo that betray cometary activity where we thought there was only rock.

What fascinates me is the Spitzer telescope trick. That perfect black circle is not the comet itself, it is a mask to avoid being blinded by its core. And that thin horizontal black line crossing the image is an instrumental artifact, not a real shadow. Thanks to that infrared technique in 2013 we learned Don Quijote was not a sleeping asteroid but an active comet with coma and tail. It is like putting thermal goggles on the universe and seeing embers where before we saw only darkness.

It looks like someone placed a round black sticker in the middle of the sky with floating fire around it. Comet Don Quixote is hiding behind the circle, but a bright cloud escapes like orange and yellow fairy dust. There is a black stripe crossing it like a road. I like to imagine the comet is playing hide and seek and Spitzer found it because it glows in invisible light, even though we cannot see it with our bare eyes.
