What you would seeLo que verías
The image is a tight, high-magnification view of the solar corona rendered in sepia, amber and burnt gold, with a turbulent, grainy, feathery texture like boiling molten metal. Near the limb — the luminous curved edge of the solar disk on the right — an intensely white, almost overexposed flash marks the flare core, projecting outward into the darkness of space as a branching, fibrous fan of darker plasma, etched against the glow like a spray of ink. Around the burst, the solar atmosphere is veined with translucent loops, arches and wispy magnetic strands that scatter the light. In the left half, a cooler, denser patch appears nearly black, likely a filament seen in extreme ultraviolet, contrasting with the incandescent center. There is no sky or stars; the background is the Sun itself, and the light seems to come from the matter itself: purest white at the flare’s heart, fading into warm halos. Fine clumps and threads, frozen at 05:38 UT, reveal at monumental scale the contained violence of plasma in motion.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start at the white burst on the right edge and trace the dark, root-like filaments fanning against the light. Then pull back toward the disk center to notice the faint loops, and to the left the dark patch that balances the frame. See how the smallest bright point reveals the largest structure: a magnetic storm.
ContextContexto
According to source data (NASA/GSFC/Solar Dynamics Observatory, via JPL Photojournal PIA17912), the still captures the third of three M-class — medium-size — solar flares that occurred in under 13 hours on July 22–23, 2016, the strongest flares of that year to that date. Taken at 05:38 UT on the 23rd, it shows the familiar bright flash plus a distinctive, curving string of plasma expelled into space at the flare’s end. The first two flares happened in quick succession, with this third one pictured here. It is a scientific false-color image, typical of SDO, translating extreme-ultraviolet wavelengths into visible tones to study solar magnetic activity.

Curious detailDato curioso
M-class flares are ten times less powerful than X-class, the strongest category, yet Earth-directed ones can disturb radio communications; this July 2016 sequence was closely tracked by the Solar Dynamics Observatory, launched in 2010 and still operating.

The conservatorLa restauradora
From my restoration table, this solar corona in sepia, amber, and burnt gold captivates me, with a texture like molten iron boiling. I notice the intensely white point near the limb, that curved edge of the disk, and the dark, branched plume shooting into space. I linger on the striated magnetic loops, the translucent veils, and that almost black filament on the left contrasting with the incandescence. It is all plasma frozen at 05:38 UT on July 23, 2016, translated from extreme ultraviolet to false color by NASA's SDO.
The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado
As a sky enthusiast, I recognize here the third of three class M flares that happened in less than 13 hours between July 22 and 23, 2016, the strongest of that year up to that date. This one is from 05:38 UT, the one that left that curved rope of plasma ejected at the end of the event. It is not visible light but extreme ultraviolet tinted so we can see arcs and coronal loops invisible to the eye. That dark plume outlined against the gold is not a shadow, it is real solar material hurled into space.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
It looks like the Sun is throwing a giant tantrum! Everything is like boiling honey-gold soup, and suddenly boom! a super bright little white light explodes near the edge. From there a dark spray comes out like a fan of smoke going into space. On the left there is a black blotch that looks like a hidden monster. I imagine the Sun is a sleepy dragon sneezing fire and all the shiny little threads are its electric whiskers dancing around.
