What you would seeLo que verías
The nearly square, black-and-white image shows a large irregular body floating against a completely black background, diagonally across the center. Its shape suggests two uneven masses joined by a narrow neck, like a peanut or a snowman that has melted. On the left, the larger lobe rises vertically and occupies almost the full height; on the right, the smaller lobe extends horizontally toward the edge and ends in sharp points. The surface looks rough, stony, and deeply worn: it is covered with pits, small craters, cracks, protruding blocks, ledges, and areas that look smooth, as if dusted with pale powder. Light falls from above and from the right, creating an extreme contrast between bright white and silvery-gray faces and deep, pitch-black shadows that swallow the lower portion and parts of the center. From the neck and the right lobe rise several faint, straight, almost transparent veils, slightly tilted, which fade into the darkness; they are jets of gas and dust. A few tiny white specks — distant stars or particles — punctuate the background. There is no visible horizon, atmosphere, or reference object, so the scale is disorienting: it could be a rock held in the hand or a mountain floating in space.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the silhouette: first notice the two lobes and the narrow neck that joins them. Then move up from the neck and look for the faint, almost transparent streaks rising into space. Finally, look closely at the edges, where the brightness drops abruptly into blackness, to appreciate how irregular the surface really is.
ContextContexto
According to the source data, this is a mosaic made from four individual images from the NAVCAM camera of the European Space Agency's Rosetta spacecraft, taken on November 20, 2014, from about 31 kilometers (19 miles) from the center of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. The file is dated December 10, 2014, probably its publication or cataloguing date. Rosetta was the first mission to orbit a comet's nucleus and accompany it in its orbit. It is not known, from these data alone, which specific filters or exposure settings were used.

Curious detailDato curioso
Comet 67P measures roughly 4 kilometers across at its widest, yet its gravity is so weak that a person could easily jump into orbit from its surface.

What captivates me most is the texture. I see a rough and eroded surface, full of pits, small craters, cracks and protruding blocks, with smooth areas dusted with light powder. The light coming from above and from the right creates a stark contrast between bright whites and black shadows that hide the lower part. It makes me think of a fragile stone that has been carved by time, suspended against a black background with no horizon or sense of scale.

For me this image is historic. It is comet 67P seen by the Rosetta spacecraft NAVCAM camera, in a mosaic of four photos taken on November 20, 2014 from about 31 kilometers away. I am thrilled to clearly see its two uneven lobes joined by a narrow neck and the faint veils of gas and dust shooting upward. It was the first time we orbited a comet like this, accompanying it on its journey and seeing it from so close.

It looks like a giant peanut floating in the darkness! Or like a melted snowman made of rock, with a big ball on the left and a little one with pointy tips on the right. Everything is covered in little holes and scratches, as if someone had nibbled on it. It scares me a little because it is alone in the blackness, but I also like it because transparent sighs come out of its neck. I wonder if it is as big as a house or as big as a mountain?

If you look closely, the comet is not a single ball but looks like it is made of two unequal parts stuck together. What everyday object is it compared to in the description because of its shape?
HintPista
Think of an elongated nut with two bumps joined in the middle.

The surface is not smooth. What three kinds of marks can you spot in the illuminated area if you look very closely?
HintPista
Look for tiny holes, round depressions and broken lines with stones sticking out.
Busca agujeritos, hundimientos redondos y líneas quebradas con piedras salidas.

From the neck of the comet some very faint and straight veils rise and get lost in the blackness. What are they?

They are like transparent sighs that the comet ejects into space.
