A three-dimensional block diagram cut away to illustrate a river system entering a lake. On the upper right, a pale yellowish land surface is crossed by thin, winding blue river channels that merge toward a single mouth; the label Rivers sits above this network. In the middle, a smooth gray fan-shaped body labeled Delta protrudes into the water, forming the transition between land and lake. On the left, a translucent light-blue water mass labeled Lake fills the basin, with faint shading suggesting depth. The front and side cutaways expose the underlying stratigraphy. At the bottom, a bright yellow horizontal band represents Lake deposits. Above it, overlapping lobate layers in shades of brown and beige curve forward and thin toward the lake interior, labeled River deposits and Delta deposits. The layers show wavy laminations and jagged, sawtooth contacts that imply progressive progradation. Small blue arrows point to the deltaic foresets. The style is clean and didactic, with sharp black outlines, flat digital coloring, and simple sans-serif labels. The palette combines soft sky blue, mustard yellow, light gray, and warm tan, with a smooth, illustration-like texture and even, shadowless lighting.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start at the top surface and trace the thin blue river threads to the gray delta lobe and then to the blue lake block. Then shift to the exposed cross-section and follow how the curved tan layers stack and thin toward the left. Noticing that tapering completely shifts the reading: it shows the delta growing outward over time.

ContextContexto

A science illustration released on December 8, 2014 by NASA, JPL-Caltech and Imperial College, hosted in the NASA Image and Video Library. According to the source description, the diagram shows rivers entering a lake; as flow slows, sediments settle and a delta builds a tapering prism of sediment toward the lake interior. No individual artist or cultural affiliation is listed; credit is institutional. It is an educational graphic typical of planetary science and geology outreach, intended to explain terrestrial sedimentary processes that serve as analogs for interpreting ancient deltas on other planets, such as Mars.

Curious detailDato curioso

Diagrams like this help NASA explain Martian deltas, such as the one in Jezero Crater explored by the Perseverance rover, which formed in much the same way as lake deltas on Earth.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. What does the wedge shape of the sediment tell us about water energy in the past?¿Qué nos dice la forma en cuña de los sedimentos sobre la fuerza del agua en el pasado?
  2. How would you tell river-borne layers apart from original lake layers just by looking at the strata?¿Cómo distinguirías, solo por las capas, lo que depositó el río de lo que ya estaba en el lago?
  3. What traces of past life might be preserved inside a delta like this?¿Qué pistas de vida pasada podrían quedar atrapadas en un delta como este?

I focus on how the layers are built under the cutaway. The lake deposits in intense yellow at the base support everything, while above the river and delta deposits overlap in brown and beige lobes that thin toward the interior of the lake. The wavy laminations and jagged contacts tell me there was progressive advance. It is a digital illustration with a smooth texture, sharp black outlines and a very careful didactic palette.

What excites me most is that this Earth diagram helps us read other planets. Here we see blue rivers converging from a pale yellow terrain, forming a gray fan called a delta and entering a translucent blue lake. When the river slows down, it drops sediments and creates a prism that narrows into the lake. NASA published it in 2014 to explain that process and thus understand ancient deltas on Mars through a geologist’s eyes.

It looks like someone sliced a giant cake made of earth to see what is inside. On top there are tiny blue rivers like wiggly worms that join together and make a gray fan going into the blue lake water. Underneath there are layers like sandwiches in yellow, brown and beige that get thinner toward the middle. The little blue arrows say look here! and everything has black outlines like a school drawing.
