What you would seeLo que verías
The image is a grid of three rows by three columns over a uniform, heavily grainy black background, like static on an old screen. There are no stars, text, or frame; the nine panels merge into one another because they share the same background. In each cell there is a single gray, irregular mass, similar to a stone or a potato seen up close, placed near the center of its cell but never identical to the others. The form is compact, with rounded contours and flat facets. Its upper and left sides usually shine in a grayish white, while the lower part fades into shadow until it blends with the black. That light does not illuminate a scene: it marks the surface that sent back the strongest radar signal. The texture is rough and speckled, full of tiny light and dark dots; no clear craters and no comet tail can be distinguished. Comparing the cells, the mass seems to turn little by little: in the top row it is squarer and more frontal; in the middle it tilts and stretches; at the bottom it becomes more triangular, with a well-defined upper edge. Scale is deceptive: each object takes up little room, yet it represents a body hundreds of meters across observed from millions of kilometers away. The whole has a quiet rhythm, almost like frames from a silent film.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First look at the grid as a whole, like a contact sheet, then compare one cell with the next to follow the slow turn. Notice the bright upper edge: it is not sunlight for a camera, but the strongest radar echo. The detail that changes the reading is the absence of a tail; the shape alone carries all the information.
ContextContexto
According to the NASA Image and Video Library source record, these radar images of comet P/2016 BA14 were obtained on March 22, 2016, with an antenna of NASA's Deep Space Network at Goldstone, California, and the record was published on March 29, 2016. At the time, the comet was about 3.6 million kilometers, or 2.2 million miles, from Earth. Credit goes to NASA/JPL-Caltech/GSSR. This is not an optical photograph: radar sends out radio waves and builds an image from the returning echo, so it can reveal shape and rotation even when the object does not look as a regular camera would record it. The exact time and duration of the observation are not known from this record alone.

Curious detailDato curioso
Although it is a comet, no tail or bright coma can be seen here: because this is a radar reconstruction, only the solid body that reflected the signal appears.
Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse
- What does it change in our idea of a comet to see it without a tail, as just a dark, irregular body turning in space?¿Qué cambia en nuestra idea de un cometa al verlo sin cola, solo como un cuerpo oscuro e irregular que gira en el espacio?
- How should we read brightness in an image that was not made with visible light, but with the echo of radio waves?¿Cómo debemos leer el brillo en una imagen que no se hizo con luz visible, sino con el eco de ondas de radio?
- What effect does the repetition of nine nearly identical views have: scientific evidence, portrait, or animation stopped in time?¿Qué efecto produce la repetición de nueve vistas casi iguales: evidencia científica, retrato o animación detenida?

What draws me in is that grainy texture on the black background. This is not an optical photo, it is an echo: the Goldstone radar sent out waves and the comet returned its shape as a drawing made of light and dark speckles. Each of the nine cells is almost the same but never identical; the brightness shifts to the top and left while the shadow below melts into the background. It looks fragile because of the grain, but it is actually a space rock hundreds of meters across slowly spinning.

This grid excites me because it is not what your eyes would see. It is comet P/2016 BA14 captured by radar on March 22, 2016, about 3.6 million kilometers away. The antenna sent radio waves and built the image from the echo, so there are no stars or tail, just a gray mass bright on top and dark below. As you follow the three rows you see its rotation: from a blocky frontal shape it stretches and becomes more triangular. It is like a silent film from deep space.

They look like nine photos of the same space potato floating in the black. Each potato is in the middle of its little square but every one is turned a tiny bit, as if someone were slowly spinning it. One side shines bright as if the sun were hitting it and the other side is almost black and hides away. It has no shiny tail like in cartoons, it is just a rough speckled rock. I like to count them and watch how its shape changes if I look at them one by one.
