What you would seeLo que verías

At the center of the image a robotic spacecraft hovers above the rugged, dusty surface of an asteroid, grasping a large boulder with articulated mechanical arms. The probe has a central body in white and silver, with panels and structures that reflect sunlight intensely, creating an almost blinding glare on one side. Two huge elongated golden solar arrays extend diagonally upward and downward, with visible cell texture and slightly folded edges. At the bottom, three yellow jointed legs cling to a dark gray porous rock. The background is the deep black of space, speckled with countless stars and a faint band of the Milky Way. The asteroid terrain is covered with craters, fine dust and stones of various sizes in shades of gray and brown. Light comes from the left, casting soft shadows and giving volume to the scene. Dust particles near the surface suggest recent contact or movement. The composition places the spacecraft as a small human artifact against a vast rocky and cosmic expanse, conveying an atmosphere of futuristic exploration and technical precision, with sharp contrasts between metallic shine, rough stone and the void.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the intense glare on the spacecraft body and its contrast with the blackness of space. Follow the golden solar panels crossing the image diagonally. Finally notice the small mechanical legs gripping the boulder, the detail that reveals the central capture action.

ContextContexto

The image is an artist concept for NASA's Asteroid Redirect Robotic Mission (ARM), dated October 22, 2015 and credited to JPL. According to the source description, it depicts the spacecraft capturing an asteroid boulder to redirect it into an astronaut-accessible orbit around Earth's moon. The source is the NASA Image and Video Library, catalog ID PIA19349. The ARM mission was proposed in the 2010s as part of efforts to develop human deep-space exploration capabilities, but it is known not to have been executed as illustrated and was later cancelled. The image is not a real photograph but a digital illustration created for scientific outreach.

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

The conservatorLa restauradora

As a conservator, I focus on what shines and what wears down. The white and silver body of the spacecraft reflects intense sunlight that almost blinds one side, contrasting with the two long golden solar panels where the cell texture is visible. Below, three yellow legs with complex joints grip a dark gray porous rock. Everything hovers over fine dust, craters and gray and brown stones, a surface that reminds us how fragile any human artifact is in space.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

Through my telescope, this illustration makes me dream about what is to come. It is not a real photo, but a 2015 artistic concept of NASA's Asteroid Redirect Robotic Mission, identifier PIA19349 credited to JPL. The idea was for this robotic spacecraft to capture a large boulder with articulated mechanical arms to bring it to an orbit around Earth's Moon accessible to astronauts. In the background, the deep black dotted with stars and the faint Milky Way remind us of the tiny scale of humanity before the cosmos.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like an octopus robot in space! It has two giant golden wings that are solar panels and three little yellow legs hugging a huge ugly rock as if it were treasure. Its white belly shines brightly from the sun coming from the left. It stands on an asteroid full of dust, craters and little gray and brown stones. Behind, everything is black with lots of tiny stars. I imagine the robot saying mine! while carrying the boulder to take it to the astronauts near the Moon.
