What you would seeLo que verías

Against a deep black background, the graphic presents four horizontally aligned panels, each containing a blurry luminous disk that is Pluto, photographed on different dates between May 29 and June 2, 2015. At the top, a small wireframe globe with a yellow axis marks the tilt of the rotational axis, labeled ROTATIONAL AXIS, and the title NEW HORIZONS LORRI IMAGES OF PLUTO appears in white sans serif capital letters. Each panel is framed by a thin white border and captioned below with technical text: the date, the central longitude (17°, 63°, 130° and 243°), the distance in kilometers and miles (from 50.5 to 55 million km) and days until arrival (42 to 46 days). The planetary disks are in pale grey and whitish tones, with irregular dark patches that shift position; in the leftmost panel a large dark equatorial region touches the limb and creates a false impression of a non-spherical shape. The image is grainy and pixelated when enlarged, with high contrast between the illuminated icy surface and the darkness of space, showing subtle variations in brightness, shadow and mottled texture typical of a distant icy body.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start at the top with the axis diagram and dates to grasp the reverse chronological order from right to left. Compare the four disks and watch how the dark patch moves from the limb toward the center and then vanishes. Notice the grain and softness as a visual trace of the enormous distance from which the spacecraft was still observing.

ContextContexto

The image is from NASA, Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory and Southwest Research Institute, captured by the LORRI camera on the New Horizons spacecraft and released on June 11, 2015, weeks before its historic flyby of Pluto on July 14, 2015. It shows four ‘faces’ of Pluto as it rotates every 6.4 days, with the axis aligned vertically for comparison. The frames were enlarged to four times native size and sharpened by deconvolution to enhance features, though finest details still needed confirmation from closer approach. The large dark feature is part of what later became informally known as the Whale region.

Curious detailDato curioso

New Horizons had been traveling for almost nine and a half years since its 2006 launch and took these views from more than 50 million kilometers away from Pluto, still over 40 days before closest approach.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. How does your perception of Pluto change when you see it as a rotating world with changing faces rather than a static dot?¿Cómo cambia tu percepción de Plutón al verlo como un mundo con rotación y estaciones en vez de como un punto estático?
  2. What does the illusion of an irregular shape caused only by light and dark contrast reveal about how we interpret planetary images?¿Qué revela el hecho de que la forma aparentemente irregular sea solo un efecto de contraste entre zonas claras y oscuras?
  3. How does digital processing like deconvolution affect what we consider an objective scientific photograph?¿Cómo influye el procesamiento digital como la deconvolución en lo que entendemos por una fotografía científica objetiva?

If you look closely you will see this is not a sharp photo but a heavily processed image. The background is absolute black and that makes the four disks of Pluto seem to float. The surface is grainy and pixelated, in grays and whites with dark patches that shift from one frame to another. It had to be enlarged four times and run through deconvolution to recover those nuances. I am interested in how the contrast between the icy bright and the darkness holds, and how each white frame organizes what is still blurry.

This is history in real time. You see four faces of Pluto taken between May 29 and June 2, 2015 by New Horizons LORRI camera, when there were still 42 to 46 days until flyby. Each panel notes the central longitude, from 17° to 243°, and the distance, from 50.5 to 55 million kilometers. Pluto rotates every 6.4 days and here you watch it turn. That dark equatorial spot on the left would later become part of the Whale zone.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

They look like four moons or four dirty marbles on a black sheet. They are all the same Pluto but it is spinning and showing us different sides, like when you twirl around. The first one on the left has a black blot so big it looks like someone took a bite out of it. The photos are blurry because it was so far away, millions of kilometers, and the probe still had a long way to travel. I like to count one, two, three, four and see how the little blot moves.
