What you would seeLo que verías
The square, black-and-white image shows an irregular body centered against an almost completely black background. Its shape recalls a rubber duck or two mountains joined by a narrow neck: a smaller, rounded lobe at the top and a larger, broader one below, tilted slightly to the right. The surface looks rocky, porous, and extremely rugged. It is covered with small craters, smooth depressions, cracks, sharp protrusions, and loose-looking blocks. Layering and fractures are visible on the upper lobe; on the lower one there are dark patches, deep pits, and flatter areas that reflect more light. The central neck, partly in shadow, appears rough and eroded, like a bridge of rubble between the two masses. A luminous halo and faint veils of gas and dust escape from several areas, especially from the neck and from behind the upper lobe, drawing diffuse rays against the darkness. Intense light from an unseen side whitens some edges and leaves others in dark gray, creating strong contrast with no atmospheric softening. At the lower left of the large lobe, a small bright protrusion seems almost detached. There are no people, text, or scale references; only a few barely visible points, probably stars, appear in the uniform blackness.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Look first at the narrow neck joining the two lobes and notice the faint jets emerging from it. Then compare the smooth areas with the fractured, cratered terrain. That contrast, together with the small bright fragment near the upper lobe, changes the image from a simple rock portrait into a record of an active, changing body.
ContextContexto
According to the source data, this photograph was taken by the NAVCAM navigation camera aboard the European Space Agency's (ESA) Rosetta spacecraft on March 14, 2015, from about 86 kilometers, or 53 miles, from the center of Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. Its resolution is about 7 meters, or 24 feet, per pixel, and the published version was cropped and processed to bring out the comet's activity. In general terms, Rosetta was a European mission that studied this comet and its surroundings at close range; the source record provides no further details about its trajectory or instruments. The source title is *Rosetta Comet Marches On*.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse
- Does the comet's two-lobed shape make it seem more like a landscape, an object, or a living creature?¿La forma de dos lóbulos hace que el cometa parezca más un paisaje, un objeto o un ser vivo?
- What can the jets of gas and dust tell us about changes that a still photograph cannot show directly?¿Qué pueden decirnos los chorros de gas y polvo sobre cambios que una fotografía fija no muestra directamente?
- How does the absence of a scale reference affect our perception of the comet's size and distance?¿Cómo afecta la ausencia de una referencia de escala a nuestra percepción del tamaño y la distancia del cometa?

I pause on how light reveals the material history of this two-lobed body. On the upper lobe you can read layers and fractures, on the lower one deep pits and dark patches, and on the central neck a rubble-like, rough texture. This black-and-white image, taken from 86 kilometers away with a resolution of 7 meters per pixel, was cropped and processed to highlight the faint veils of gas and dust. I think about how porous and fragile all that rugged terrain must be.

What excites me most is that this is not an illustration but a real photo taken on March 14, 2015 by Rosetta's NAVCAM. Seeing comet 67P suspended in blackness, with its rubber-duck shape and jets streaming from the neck and from behind the upper lobe, reminds me we are just 86 kilometers from its center. The luminous halo and those diffuse rays are gas and dust escaping into space, visible thanks to the intense contrast of light with no atmosphere.

It looks like a giant rubber duck floating in the darkness! It has two bellies joined by a skinny little neck, all full of tiny holes, cracks and pebbles. It is a black-and-white photo and it looks dusty, like it is puffing shiny little smoke clouds from different spots. Down on the left there is a little shiny pebble that looks like it is breaking off. It tickles me to think someone took this photo from a spaceship very close by, 86 kilometers away, out in the black space.
