What you would seeLo que verías
Against a deep, uniform black background, almost velvety, two pixelated celestial bodies float at great distance. Near the lower center, slightly to the left, Pluto appears as a square, diffuse disk in pale beige and light brown tones, with a brighter core and edges fading into grayish pixels that reveal its low resolution. A thin white vertical line crosses it above and below, a digital centering mark. Above and to the right, smaller and fainter, Charon is visible, with a similar but darker and more grayish palette, also formed by blocks of pixels that convey its remoteness. In the upper left corner, white sans-serif text reads: New Horizons MVIC Color Imager, Distance from Pluto: 54.8 million km, Date: 2015-05-29 11:38 UTC and Pluto-centric view. The image is minimalist, with vast black emptiness around it, conveying a sense of cosmic solitude and technical precision. The light is flat, without strong shadows, typical of a scientific capture taken millions of kilometers away.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First read the technical text at the top to place yourself at the distance and date. Then observe the vast black void and how the two small luminous points hold the entire composition. Notice the subtle tonal difference between Pluto and Charon and the white line that reveals this image as a scientific construction, not just a photograph.
ContextContexto
This is a still frame from the first color movie from NASA's New Horizons mission, released on June 11, 2015 by NASA / Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory / Southwest Research Institute. It was taken on May 29, 2015 at 54.8 million kilometers from Pluto with the Multispectral Visible Imaging Camera (MVIC) on the Ralph instrument, using three filters — blue, red and near-infrared — to create near-true color. The sequence, described as Pluto-centric, keeps Pluto digitally centered while Charon orbits around it. The two bodies form a binary system: Pluto rotates every 6 days, 9 hours and 17.6 minutes, the same time Charon takes to orbit it.

Curious detailDato curioso
Pluto and Charon are sometimes considered a double planet because their barycenter lies outside Pluto, and they are tidally locked, always showing the same face to each other.

I pause at the fragility of this image: two pixelated disks in light beige and grayish tones against a velvety black. I am not looking for sharpness, but for traces: the pixelated degraded edges, Pluto's luminous core and that thin white vertical line centering it digitally. The technical text in the corner reveals its origin. It is a scientific photograph from 2015 taken 54.8 million kilometers away, and its value lies precisely in that limited resolution that documents an extreme distance.

What excites me is that this is a real dance. This Pluto-centric view keeps Pluto centered while Charon, smaller and darker, moves above and to the right. They were captured on May 29, 2015 by New Horizons' MVIC camera with blue, red and near-infrared filters to achieve near-true color. They form a perfect binary system: Pluto rotates every 6 days, 9 hours and 17.6 minutes, exactly how long Charon takes to orbit it. Orbital science and poetry.

They look like two dirty marbles floating in the blackest darkness I have ever seen. Pluto is the bigger one, like light beige with pale brown, and Charon is smaller and gray. They are all alone in the middle of nothing and they look all blocky, like an old video game, because they are super far away. There are tiny white letters in the corner and a little white line crossing Pluto. I like to think they are dancing together without ever letting go in space.
