What you would seeLo que verías
At the center of a deep, velvety black background floats the full disk of the Sun, sharply defined and encircled by a diffuse, glowing halo in shades of orange, gold and greenish light. The solar surface is not smooth: it shows swirling veins and turbulent plumes in burnt ochre, dark reddish-brown and incandescent yellow, with textures that recall thick lava or storm clouds seen from space. Against this warm tapestry stand out several intense points of blue and white light, like lit jewels; the most prominent shines in the upper right quadrant, with a whitish-blue core surrounded by a violet haze, while smaller specks dot the lower left edge and the right flank. Around the limb, the corona appears as a translucent, fluffy veil that fades into darkness. There is no horizon or human scale; the composition is circular and centered, conveying contained energy where cool flashes of color punctuate the dominant heat of the disk.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the brightest blue-white burst in the upper right, then trace the fiery ring around the solar limb to feel its halo. Notice how the small blue spots cut through the warm palette: that is the extreme energy only NuSTAR can reveal.
ContextContexto
This composite combines near-simultaneous observations from three telescopes around April 29, 2015, released on July 8, 2015 and credited to NASA/JPL-Caltech/GSFC/JAXA. Blue marks high-energy X-rays from NASA’s Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) in the 2 to 6 kiloelectron volt range, green shows low-energy X-rays from Japan’s Hinode, and yellow and red show extreme ultraviolet light from NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory. The blue-white patches pinpoint the most energetic active regions, heated to millions of degrees, where microflares occurred. Normally aimed at supernovae and black holes, NuSTAR was used here to image the Sun with unprecedented sensitivity to study microflares and hypothesized nanoflares.

Curious detailDato curioso
Although NuSTAR was built to peer deep into the cosmos for black holes and supernovae, it can safely observe the Sun and capture its high-energy X-rays with greater sensitivity than previous solar instruments.

What captivates me is how this composite image holds its light. The velvety black background lets the orange, golden and greenish halo breathe around the solar disk. I see layers that do not cover each other but become transparent: the yellow and red from extreme ultraviolet, the green from low-energy X-rays and the intense blue from high-energy X-rays. I pause at that white-bluish dot in the upper right quadrant, with its violet veil, and think about the care taken to keep the contrast from burning out while every ochre and reddish texture remains readable.

I love seeing the whole Sun like a laboratory floating in darkness. This view from April 29, 2015 joins three eyes: NuSTAR in blue for 2 to 6 kiloelectron-volt X-rays, Hinode in green and NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory in yellow and red. Those bluish-white dots are active regions at millions of degrees where microflares occurred. What is curious is that NuSTAR was born to hunt supernovae and black holes, and here it helps us understand tiny flashes that heat the solar corona.

It looks like a giant lava marble with magic sparks. The Sun sits in the middle of the blackness and around it has a little orange and golden cloud that glows like cotton candy. On top there are red and yellow patches swirling like whirlpools and little blue dots blinking on and off like cold little gems. The biggest one is up on the right and shines bright with white and purple light. I like it because the heat of the disk and the cold of the dots fight inside the same circle.
