What you would seeLo que verías

A two-panel scientific photograph set against pure black space showing comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. On the left, the full nucleus appears as an irregular bilobed body, like a rubber duck or a bone, with a rugged, porous, and craggy surface in shades of light and dark gray with deep shadows that emphasize relief. At the top of the smaller lobe, red text reads «C. Alexander Gate» with a small red arrow pointing to a notch between two rocky peaks. The lighting is harsh and oblique, creating bright highlights on slopes and almost white glints. On the right, a thin white-bordered inset gives a close-up black-and-white view of that same notch, revealing jagged cliffs, fractured boulders and a granular, almost lunar texture. A thin red circle frames the opening between the two rock spires, turning the natural gap into a gate against the black void, speckled with faint light pixels from stars or sensor noise.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the full silhouette on the left to grasp the comet's shape, then move to the magnified view on the right. Notice how the grazing light sculpts the cliffs and how the red circle transforms a simple notch into a meaningful threshold.

ContextContexto

Scientific image released on September 29, 2015 by NASA/JPL using data from ESA's Rosetta mission and its OSIRIS camera. According to the source, the Rosetta team named features on comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko to honor late colleagues; the «C. Alexander Gate» on the comet's smaller lobe is dedicated to Claudia Alexander, U.S. project scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, who passed away in July 2015. The Rosetta mission famously orbited the comet and deployed the Philae lander. No further details about the second honoree are visible in this image.

The conservatorLa restauradora

I focus on how this image preserves memory through marking. The diptych plays with two scales: on the left the full nucleus in rugged grays and on the right the grainy close-up in black and white. The red of the text, arrow and circle is not decorative, it is pure signaling that interrupts the absolute black to say look here. To conserve this gesture is to conserve a human decision to name and honor within a harsh, luminous extraterrestrial landscape.

What you see is the bilobed nucleus of comet 67P, with that rubber duck shape that always amazes me. The left photo shows it whole under harsh side lighting, with deep shadows and slopes that look almost white. The right one is a zoom into a notch between two peaks on the small lobe, encircled in red. That opening is C. Alexander Gate, named in 2015 by the Rosetta team to remember their colleague. A natural gateway facing the void.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a giant bone floating in blackness, all covered with rocks and peaks. On the left you see it whole and on the right there is a little box that zooms in like a magnifying glass. There is a red arrow and a red circle telling you here is the tiny secret door! between two mountains. It is not a real door, it is rock, but I imagine going through it into space. I like spotting the tiny white dot that looks like a lost little star.
