What you would seeLo que verías

The image is presented as a horizontal diptych, two square panels placed side by side against an almost uniform black background. In each panel the same planetary disk appears, enormous and centered, filling most of the frame and standing out sharply against the darkness of space. The sphere is practically in shadow: its interior is deep black, with no visible relief, and only its edge reveals that it is a round, solid body. In the left version, a soft, diffuse white and grayish halo surrounds the limb. It is stronger and broader at the top and on the right, where it receives sunlight, and fainter at the lower left. Nearly imperceptible dark patches and very fine parallel streaks cross that upper glow. In the right version, the halo becomes a thin, crisp, bright ring, like a line of light drawn with a compass. Around it, many faint concentric layers can be distinguished, separated by dark gaps and fading gradually outward. Tiny isolated white dots appear in the blackness, the left panel has slightly clipped corners, and the surface looks almost smooth and grainless, as expected in a black-and-white digital scientific image. The scale feels both monumental and intimate: a silent sphere floating with no reference for its size.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Compare the two panels first, rather than treating them as two different planets. Then follow the bright rim on the right and count how many faint concentric layers you can separate. The detail that changes the reading is that processing does not add decoration: it makes an atmosphere visible that first looks like a simple halo.

ContextContexto

According to the source, these are two versions of the same photograph of Pluto's haze, taken by NASA's New Horizons spacecraft and released on September 10, 2015. It was captured nearly 16 hours after the July 14, 2015 close approach, from about 770,000 kilometers (480,000 miles), looking back at Pluto's night side, with north at the top and the Sun illuminating it from the upper right. The left version received only minor processing; the right was specially processed to reveal many discrete haze layers. The subtle parallel streaks are probably crepuscular rays: shadows cast on the haze by mountains or other topography.

  1. What changes in our understanding of a world when we look at it from its night side rather than in full sunlight?¿Qué cambia en nuestra idea de un mundo cuando lo miramos desde su lado nocturno y no a plena luz?
  2. Where is the boundary between recording an image and interpreting it, when processing reveals what a first version barely shows?¿Dónde está el límite entre registrar una imagen e interpretarla, cuando el procesamiento revela lo que la primera versión apenas muestra?
  3. Why does such a dark, almost empty image produce a sense of closeness to a body so far away?¿Por qué una imagen tan oscura y casi vacía puede producir cercanía con un cuerpo tan lejano?

The conservatorLa restauradora

I pause on how this diptych shows two states of the same image. On the left I see a soft, diffuse whitish and grayish halo, wider at the top and to the right; on the right that same halo becomes a thin, crisp ring. As a conservator I am drawn to that shift from minimal to revealed. I notice the smooth digital texture, the almost uniform black background and the dark disk filling most of the frame. The concentric layers and subtle streaks invite slow looking, without adding anything.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

What excites me is the backlighting. We are looking at the night side of Pluto, with the Sun shining from the upper right, so only the edge lights up. The left panel keeps the halo natural, with brighter glow at the top; the right one, heavily processed, splits that glow into many faint concentric layers. I picture the probe 770,000 kilometers away, looking back 16 hours after closest approach. Those tiny white dots in the blackness and the shadowed sphere remind me how vast and silent the solar system is.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

They look like two photos of the same giant ball floating in the dark. On the left the ball wears a thick blurry scarf of light; on the right the scarf becomes a super thin bright line with many circles around it like ripples in water. The ball in the middle is all black, with no markings. I like counting the rings and spotting where the light is strongest, at the upper right. If I stare long enough I feel I am on a spaceship, watching a sleepy planet that makes no sound.
