What you would seeLo que verías
At the center of the image, silhouetted against the absolute black of space, floats the irregular, bilobed shape of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. The photograph is in high-contrast black and white. Most of the nucleus appears in deep shadow, almost pitch black, dominating the center and upper half of the frame, with a form reminiscent of a rubber duck or two boulders joined by a narrow neck. Only the rims are sunlit by grazing sunlight: on the upper left, a rugged, jagged ridge glows in pure white, its texture porous and pitted with tiny craters and uneven overhangs. On the right side, the smaller lobe is also intensely lit, revealing steep cliffs and fragmented, blocky terrain. On the lower left, another thin edge cuts through the darkness with a bright line. The background is an empty void speckled with faint white dots that are stars or sensor noise. The light is harsh and lateral, casting extremely long shadows and hiding the central relief in half-darkness, which heightens the sense of volume and sculpted topography. Fine dust and subtle grain are barely visible across the shadowed surface if viewed patiently.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First trace the bright rim to grasp the comet's double-lobed shape, then let your eye move into the large dark central area. Notice how sunlight just grazes the edges to reveal topography; that tension between deep shadow and brilliant crest is the key to sensing its cold, rugged landscape.

This view was captured on September 29, 2014 by the OSIRIS (Optical, Spectroscopic, and Infrared Remote Imaging System) instrument aboard ESA's Rosetta spacecraft, while comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko was still in its long southern winter and its southern polar regions remained largely in shadow. Rosetta, launched in 2004, was the first mission to orbit and escort a comet, later deploying the Philae lander in November 2014. The image is archived by NASA/JPL and is used for thermal and morphological studies of the cometary nucleus.

Curious detailDato curioso
ESA's Rosetta escorted comet 67P for over two years and mapped its surface at resolutions down to tens of centimeters per pixel, showing that its duck-like shape likely resulted from two bodies gently colliding in the early solar system.

I see a high-contrast black and white photograph where almost the entire nucleus remains in deep shadow and only the edges catch grazing sunlight. I am drawn to how that harsh lighting reveals the fragility of the object: rugged ridges, fragmented cliffs and suspended dust against an absolute black background. The visible grain and sensor noise remind me this is not a perfect postcard, but a scientific record taken by OSIRIS in 2014 during the southern winter, meant to study shape and temperature without interference.

What floats there is the bilobed nucleus of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, with its famous rubber-duck silhouette and two lobes joined by a narrow neck. We are looking at its south pole on September 29, 2014, still in winter, which is why the center is dark and only the ridges at upper left and the smaller lobe at right shine in pure white. It thrills me to know it was taken by ESA's Rosetta, the first probe to orbit a comet before releasing Philae.

It looks like a giant stone rubber duck floating in the dark. Almost everything is super black and only the edges glow as if someone is shining a little flashlight along the sides. I see bumpy peaks full of tiny holes, like bitten cookies, and on the right a very sharp mountain. Down at lower left there is a super thin line of light. The background is full of little dots that are stars and it gives me shivers because it looks so cold and lonely in space.

If you count the main bright areas cut by the sun, how many illuminated ridges stand out on the comet's edges?

Look at upper left, right side and lower left: they are white lines separated by the central shadow.
