What excites me is that we are seeing Pluto backlit, with the Sun behind it, just fifteen minutes after New Horizons closest approach on July 14 2015. Most of the disk is in complete night and only the right limb lights up as a super thin crescent, with ridges and shadows exaggerated by grazing light. That ghostly ring around the edge is its atmosphere lit from behind. It looks like a giant cookie with a bite taken out, leaving only the shiny edge. Almost everything is black, as if Pluto were hiding in the dark, and only on the right there is a thin white and gray stripe, all scratchy, with little rocks and tiny mountains. Around it there is a soft glow, like when you blow and see dust in the air. There is nothing else, just silent black space. I like it because it looks mysterious, like a planet playing hide and seek with light.
