What you would seeLo que verías
The piece is a rectangular grid in black and white, divided into two horizontal rows of four panels each, separated by very thin gray lines. In every panel, against a deep black background filled with fine grain and scattered white specks like static, appears a single irregular rocky body, off-center and taking up roughly half of each frame. Its shape is lumpy and asymmetrical, wider and brighter at the top, narrower and darker toward the bottom, like a rough stone head tilted slightly. The surface has no smooth areas: it is mottled, granular and pitted, with patches of intense white, medium grays and almost black shadows that suggest bumps, hollows and a coarse, dusty texture, although this is radar data and not a visible surface. From one panel to the next the change is minimal; the bright upper cap shifts a little, the lower profile moves, and some small bright points appear or vanish, giving a sense of slow rotation. A small isolated white dot can be seen near the body in some lower frames. Below the grid there is a wider black band with three lines of bold white text identifying the object, the radar technique, the date and time in UTC, and the range resolution. The overall scale is ambiguous without the caption: the object could seem hand-sized, when in fact it is an enormous body in space.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First, move across the top row from left to right, then continue along the bottom row, as if watching a very slow flipbook. Next, compare the bright speckled cap with the darker lower edge in each frame. The detail that changes the reading is the subtle shift in the silhouette: it is not eight different rocks, but the same object rotating over the course of minutes.
ContextContexto
This is a scientific radar image of asteroid 2015 TB145, released by NASA/JPL-Caltech on November 3, 2015. According to the source, the eight frames were obtained on October 31, 2015, between 5:55 and 6:08 a.m. PDT, when the asteroid was about 710,000 to 690,000 kilometers from Earth. Later that day, it safely passed at about 1.3 lunar distances, roughly 480,000 kilometers. To create the images, the 70-meter DSS-14 antenna at Goldstone, California, transmitted high-power microwaves toward the asteroid, and the echoes were received by the 100-meter Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia. The stated resolution is about 4 meters per pixel. Its exact composition is not stated in the source.

Curious detailDato curioso
This is not an optical photograph lit by the Sun: its brightness records the strength of radar echoes bouncing back from the asteroid, which is why the surface looks like static from an old television.
Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse
- How does your perception of the asteroid change when you learn that this light is radar echo rather than sunlight?¿Cómo cambia tu percepción del asteroide cuando sabes que esa luz no es luz solar, sino eco de radar?
- What does this sequence of eight almost identical images tell us about time and movement in space?¿Qué nos dice esta secuencia de ocho imágenes casi idénticas sobre el tiempo y el movimiento en el espacio?

If you look closely you will see this is not a photograph but a radar data print in black and white. There are eight panels in two rows of four, separated by thin gray lines. The background is black with fine grain and scattered white speckles. I am interested in how that grainy texture is preserved, with intense whites and grays marking a rough, pitted surface. Notice the rocky body is off-center and changes very little from panel to panel, just the brightness on top and the outline below.

What you see are eight radar echoes of asteroid 2015 TB145 taken on October 31, 2015 between 5:55 and 6:08 a.m. Pacific time. The DSS-14 antenna at Goldstone sent microwaves and the Green Bank telescope received the echo when it was about 700 thousand kilometers away. The black strip at the bottom tells the whole story: date, time in UTC and resolution of 4 meters per pixel. The small isolated white dot that appears in some lower panels is also part of the echo.

It looks like a skull head floating in the darkness! It is like a giant rock shaped like a head spinning very slowly. In each little square it moves just a tiny bit, brighter on top and darker and smaller at the bottom. Everything is full of white dots like TV static. At the bottom there are white letters on a black strip that tell its name. It makes me giggle and feel a little spooky, like Halloween in space!
