What you would seeLo que verías
The image centers on a large spherical planet suspended in the blackness of space, viewed at a three-quarter angle and illuminated from the left. Its surface appears cracked and rugged, covered with broad plates in muted blue-grey tones suggestive of cooled rock, intricately veined with glowing orange and vivid red channels that read as molten lava and incandescent fissures. Toward the right, the night side fades into deep shadow where the luminous cracks become sparser. A diffuse, elongated haze in warm ochre and golden brown trails behind and around the planet, evoking vaporized rock or dust swept away by stellar radiation. The background is a deep, star-speckled void with a faint horizontal glow stretching across. A thin, whitish rim light outlines the planet’s limb, sharpening its silhouette and emphasizing its fiery, textured crust. The composition is dramatic yet scientifically styled, with no humans, spacecraft, or lettering present.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Begin with the contrast between the cool, shadowed crust and the bright lava networks. Follow the golden haze trailing behind the planet to sense motion and loss of material. Notice the delicate rim light and the tiny background stars that convey immense scale and isolation.
ContextContexto
This is a scientific illustration released on March 30, 2016 by NASA/JPL-Caltech via the NASA Image and Video Library. It depicts one possible scenario for the hot, rocky exoplanet 55 Cancri e, described as nearly twice as wide as Earth. New data from NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope at the time revealed extreme temperature variations on the planet, supporting the artistic interpretation of a partly molten surface. It is an artist’s concept intended to visualize scientific hypotheses, not a direct photograph.

Curious detailDato curioso
55 Cancri e orbits its host star in under 18 hours, making its year shorter than a single Earth day.

As a conservator I focus on how this illustration makes visible what we cannot photograph. The fractured surface combines grayish and bluish plates with orange and red veins suggesting lava, and the contrast between the illuminated hemisphere and shadow creates depth. The ochre trail behind the planet indicates vaporized material and the whitish halo along the limb outlines the sphere against the black of space. It is a 2016 visualization based on Spitzer data imagining a world almost twice as wide as Earth with extreme temperature.

Through my telescope I would never see 55 Cancri e like this, which is why this image excites me. Published on March 30 2016 by NASA/JPL-Caltech, this space art translates temperature variations detected by Spitzer into a rocky planet almost twice as wide as Earth. I love spotting the illuminated side on the left, the night hemisphere on the right fading into shadow, and the golden dust trail dragged by stellar wind. It is not a direct photo but a visual hypothesis that helps us imagine other planetary systems.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
It looks like a giant burnt cookie floating in space! I see a bumpy ball in the middle with orange and red cracks that look like glowing lava, and bluish parts like cold rock. One side is lit and the other is dark. Behind it leaves a little tail of ochre and golden dust, as if it were melting. All around is black with tiny little stars. I imagine it is super hot there and we could not stand without burning our feet.
