What you would seeLo que verías

This is a panchromatic black-and-white global map of Pluto, shown as a wide rectangular projection that unfolds the dwarf planet’s entire surface. At the centre sits a large, bright heart-shaped feature: its left lobe is smoother and more luminous, its right lobe slightly more textured, both standing out sharply against the darker, rugged surroundings. To the left and right stretch mottled, heavily cratered terrains in mid-grays, with circular craters appearing as dark rings with lighter centres. The north polar area at the top looks paler and faintly hazy, forming a lighter cap. A dense, almost black equatorial band runs horizontally across the lower third, broken only by the central heart’s brightness spilling downward into it. The south polar region at the bottom is a solid black void with a jagged, wavy edge, indicating terrain that was in darkness and not imaged during the flyby. The overall texture is grainy and rough, with subtle shading that hints at icy plains, mountain blocks and ancient impact basins seen at an intimate, landscape scale.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the bright heart at the centre and see how its glow cuts through the dark equatorial band. Then scan sideways to compare cratered highlands with smoother plains. End at the black, uneven cut at the bottom, a reminder of the unseen southern night.

ContextContexto

This global map was assembled by the science team of NASA’s New Horizons mission together with the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory and the Southwest Research Institute. According to source data, it is an updated panchromatic mosaic combining all resolved images of Pluto’s surface acquired between July 7 and 14, 2015, during the spacecraft’s close flyby. Released in 2016 via the NASA Image and Video Library and credited to NASA / JPL, it provided the first complete high-resolution view of Pluto’s varied geology, including its now-famous heart-shaped plain.

Curious detailDato curioso

The bright heart at the centre is informally named Tombaugh Regio after Clyde Tombaugh, who discovered Pluto in 1930, and its plains are dominated by nitrogen ice that flows like a glacier.

  1. How does it feel to look at a whole world that no human had seen in such detail before 2015?¿Qué te hace sentir ver un mundo entero que ningún humano había visto con este detalle hasta 2015?
  2. How does seeing a planet as a map full of scars, plains and shadows change your idea of a distant point of light?¿Cómo cambia tu idea de un planeta cuando lo ves como un mapa lleno de cicatrices, llanuras y sombras en lugar de un punto de luz?
  3. Which area on this surface looks most inviting or most hostile to you, and why?¿Qué parte de esta superficie te parece más acogedora o más hostil, y por qué?

The conservatorLa restauradora

Looking with a restorer's magnifier, this black and white map is a patient mosaic: all resolved images from July 7 to 14, 2015 stitched into a rectangular projection. I love the preserved contrast, from the deep black of the south pole with no data to the smooth brightness of the left half of the central heart, that Tombaugh Regio. The gray variations reveal a grainy texture, ring-shaped craters and the dark equatorial belt that calls for visual cleaning without erasing history.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

As an amateur astronomer I am thrilled to finally see Pluto unfolded in full. This panchromatic mosaic from New Horizons, from July 2015 and released in 2016, shows what no Earth telescope could: the heart-shaped Tombaugh Regio shining at the center, scattered craters in medium grays and the hazy north polar cap on top. Below, the black irregular cut of the south pole reminds us we only saw the sunlit side during the flyby.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a black and white ice cream world! In the middle there is a giant bright heart, as if someone drew it with white chalk. It has one super smooth half and one more bumpy half. Around it there are many little dots that are craters, like marble holes. On top there is a light stripe that is the north pole. At the bottom everything is black because it was nighttime there and the spacecraft could not take pictures. I like it because it looks like a space puzzle.
