What you would seeLo que verías

Against a completely black background, a huge planetary sphere occupies the left side and almost the entire height of the image. Its right portion is brightly lit in cream, ivory, and pale beige tones, with very soft mottling and faint pinkish-tan streaks stretched horizontally, like a continuous layer of haze with no sharp edges. The left portion falls into shadow, shifting into deep teal and dark blue, though its curved outline remains visible. Around the whole planet there is a thin, diffuse, electric-blue halo that separates it from the blackness of space and suggests an atmosphere glowing at the edge. On the right limb, toward the middle, a small empty white rectangle marks a tiny fragment. From that mark, a dark gray wedge widens toward the right, leading to a rectangular inset with a thin white border. Inside that zoomed view, the planet's edge is a narrow vertical brown and black band at the left, followed by an intense blue sky. Several irregular, wispy white clouds, resembling torn cotton or smoke, stretch vertically across it. The right side of the inset gradually fades to black. There are no stars, people, text, or other objects.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the large lit face and notice that there are no clear continents or sharp details, only a hazy veil. Then follow the white rectangle on the edge to the inset: that tiny patch becomes a tall atmospheric profile. That change in scale reveals the point of the image: the most important part may be hidden beneath the clouds.

ContextContexto

This is an artist's concept, not a direct photograph. According to the source data, it was published by NASA/JPL-Caltech on June 8, 2016, to illustrate a study in The Astrophysical Journal led by researchers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. The study examined hot Jupiters observed with the Hubble Space Telescope: exoplanets roughly Jupiter-sized that orbit very close to their stars. Its conclusion was that layers of clouds or haze can block the detection of water located beneath them. The specific planet depicted is not identified; it probably represents this type of world in general.

Curious detailDato curioso

According to the study cited by NASA, clouds or haze could be hiding as much as half of the water present in the atmospheres of these hot Jupiters from telescopes.

What moves me most is that smooth horizontal haze in cream and ivory tones covering the sphere, so even it looks like varnish. When I see it I think of a glaze that prevents us from seeing what lies underneath, and of the careful work of cleaning layer by layer. The thin electric blue halo around the planet acts as a luminous edge that separates it from the black background and reveals the atmosphere. I linger on the gray wedge and the inset on the right, because that close-up with tattered white clouds invites us to peek at the limb and uncover what is hidden.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I always dreamed of seeing a hot Jupiter, even if only as an illustration. Here it is huge on the left, half in deep petrol blue shadow and half in creamy light with pinkish streaks. I know this is not a photograph, it is an artist concept from 2016 to explain what Hubble observed, that haze can hide water. I love the tiny white rectangle and the magnified inset, because it turns that blurry limb into an intense blue sky with vertical white clouds, as if we could spy on the atmosphere backlit by its star.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a giant marble floating in the dark. On one side it is vanilla cookie colored and on the other it is dark blue like the bottom of a pool at night. It has a light blue ring around it that glows. The funniest part is that on the right side there is a tiny white square with a gray arrow leading to a bigger square. There the planet is just a little brown stripe and white clouds appear like fluffy cotton. They look like little stretched ghosts in the blue sky!
