What you would seeLo que verías

The image is split into two side-by-side vertical panels showing the same moment on the Sun captured in two different extreme-ultraviolet wavelengths. On the left, in coppery burnt-orange tones, and on the right, in intense golden yellow, the curved solar limb fills most of the frame’s height. In the lower right quadrant of the solar disk, a brilliant whitish eruption bursts outward in an elongated, diamond-like spike with diffraction rays extending into the blackness of space, surrounded by translucent fan-shaped plumes and wispy filaments. Higher up, near the pole, a more diffuse, ethereal plume rises like a crown of gas. The solar surface shows granular, mottled textures, tangled magnetic loops and darker speckled regions. In the right panel, coronal arcs appear sharper and more fibrous, with spark-like brightenings. Both panels bear a small white timestamp in the lower corner: 2017-09-10T16:34:16 AIA 193 and 16:34:45 AIA 171. The background is absolute black, making the incandescent contrast dramatic.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First compare the two panels and notice how the same burst changes texture and color with wavelength. Then trace the fine coronal loops, especially the bright fan-like arcs opening from the eruption site, where the magnetic reorganization becomes visible.

ContextContexto

According to NASA/JPL source data, this is an X8-class solar flare that erupted on September 10, 2017, one of the strongest of that solar cycle, from the same sunspot region that had produced an X9 flare days earlier. The view combines two channels of the Solar Dynamics Observatory’s AIA instrument, at 193 and 171 angstroms, artificially colorized to identify each wavelength. Each reveals different coronal features, and the loops visible after the flare are magnetic field lines reorganizing after the eruption. The original video covers about six hours and is catalogued as PIA21958.

Curious detailDato curioso

X-class flares are the most powerful category; an X8 releases energy equivalent to billions of hydrogen bombs, though its light reaches Earth in just over eight minutes.

  1. How does your perception of the Sun change when you see it as a structure of gases and magnetic fields rather than a simple yellow disk?¿Cómo cambia tu percepción del Sol al verlo no como un disco amarillo sino como una estructura de gases y campos magnéticos?
  2. What does it suggest to you that two different colors represent light invisible to the human eye?¿Qué te sugiere el hecho de que dos colores distintos representen luz invisible para el ojo humano?
  3. What connection do you imagine between solar bursts like this and technology on Earth?¿Qué relación imaginas entre estos estallidos solares y la tecnología en la Tierra?

What you see is not the Sun as the human eye would perceive it, but two artificially colored readings in extreme ultraviolet, in coppery orange and intense golden yellow. I focus on the contrast: the absolute black background makes the whitish eruption in the lower right quadrant vibrate, with its diamond shape and diffraction spikes. I notice how each panel makes the plasma loops and luminous fans appear sharper or more diffuse, and how the white timestamp anchors this magnetic violence to a precise moment on September 10, 2017.

This is the peak moment of the X8 class flare of September 10, 2017, one of the most powerful of that solar cycle, captured by the AIA instrument on the Solar Dynamics Observatory. On the left channel 193 and on the right 171 angstroms show the same curved limb, but reveal different structures: in one the magnetic loops look tangled, in the other more fibrous and sparkly. The lower eruption and the upper polar plume are plasma following field lines that are reorganizing after releasing enormous energy.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

They look like two suns side by side like color twins! One is burnt orange and the other is golden yellow like shiny honey. Down on the right there is a super pointy white explosion that looks like a diamond with spikes coming out like little rays, and up top there is another little cloud floating like a crown. I like that the background is deep black, so everything shines brighter, and that you can see lots of little threads and curly lights all tangled like the Sun had messy electric hair.
