What you would seeLo que verías
Against a deep black void, two horizontal rows of illuminated celestial bodies appear to float. On the top row, seven planets labeled b through h of the TRAPPIST-1 system, shown to scale relative to one another; on the bottom row, four inner Solar System planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars. Each sphere shows distinct textures: some smooth and hazy in pale blue-green and cream tones, others rocky with mottled ochres, browns and greys suggesting clouds, craters or misty atmospheres. Light strikes from one side, creating soft highlights and curved shadows that give volume and sphericity. Beneath each planet, blocks of text in white, pale cyan and light green list in English orbital period, distance from star, radius, mass, density and surface gravity. The contrast between the upper row — compact, Earth-sized worlds — and the lower row — with noticeably larger Venus and Earth — structures the composition. In the upper right corner the word ‘Illustrations’ appears in small type, indicating artistic renderings.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First scan the two rows left to right to compare sizes and colors. Then pause on the numbers beneath each world: the short orbital periods in days reveal how tightly the TRAPPIST-1 planets circle their star. Notice how changes in brightness and texture shift the impression of habitability from one world to the next.

Educational science image released on February 5, 2018 by NASA/JPL-Caltech, available in the NASA Image and Video Library as PIA22094. The top row presents artist concepts of the seven TRAPPIST-1 planets with values current as of February 2018: orbital periods, distances, radii, masses, densities and surface gravity compared to Earth. The bottom row shows the same parameters for Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars. Mass and density measurements came from transit-timing variations observed extensively with NASA’s Spitzer and Kepler space telescopes, combined with Hubble and ground-based data, described as the most precise to date for any exoplanet system at that time. Relative planet sizes are shown to scale.

Curious detailDato curioso
All TRAPPIST-1 planets complete an orbit in under 19 days, while Mercury — the fastest in the Solar System — takes about 88 days, meaning the entire system would fit well within Mercury’s orbit.

I pause on how this infographic breathes against the deep black. Side lighting creates a soft sheen on each sphere and reveals different textures: some smooth and hazy in greenish blue and cream, others speckled in ochre and brown. On top the seven TRAPPIST-1 worlds, b through h, tiny and close together; below Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars, with Venus and Earth noticeably bulkier. Underneath, blocks of text in white, pale sky blue and mint list period, distance, radius, mass, density and surface gravity. All at relative scale, like a floating sample chart.

What thrills me is the direct comparison. On top, seven terrestrial TRAPPIST-1 planets shown as artist concepts; below, our inner neighborhood with Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars. Seeing them at relative scale makes clear how compact TRAPPIST-1 is. Each world comes with its data block in English listing orbital period, distance to the star, radius, mass, density and surface gravity. These are February 2018 values, derived from transit timing variations measured by Spitzer and Kepler, with support from Hubble and ground observatories, presented as the most precise to date for an exoplanet system.

It looks like someone put giant marbles floating in the dark. On top there are seven little balls with letter names, from b to h, all huddled close as if they do not want to drift apart. Below are four I know: Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars, and Earth and Venus look chunkier. Some are bluish, others creamy and others brownish with speckles. Under each one there are tiny colored labels telling their secrets. In a little corner it says Illustrations, as if they were drawings to help us imagine other worlds.
