Top-down satellite view of a rugged, snow-covered Karakoram mountain system, with deep valleys and glaciers winding like frozen rivers. In the lower right quadrant, a prominent elongated glacier stands out, pale gray with dark longitudinal moraine stripes, descending in an S-shape and widening where it meets another valley. To its left, a narrower, paler glacier slides between jagged ridges capped with brilliant white snow. The terrain is steep and textured: brown and ochre slopes etched by gullies contrast with pure summit snow and the bluish-gray ice. Low clouds or thin gray mist hover near the center, softening the contrast. Light is even and orbital, without human shadows, revealing granular rock textures, glacial striations and debris fields. Near the upper left, a small reddish patch appears, likely a sensor artifact or false-color effect. The scale is vast — tens of kilometers — where glaciers look like veins across stone, and fine tributaries feed the main ice streams amid sharp, frosted peaks.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Trace the broad glacier on the right from south to north and follow its dark stripes that record flow. Then look at where it meets and blocks the side valley — the surge front. Notice the central mist: it reminds you this is real atmosphere, not a model, over a landscape that looks like a miniature.

ContextContexto

According to NASA/JPL data, this image is one of a pair acquired by the ASTER instrument on NASA’s Terra satellite, on August 20, 2015 and May 21, 2017. It shows Khurdopin Glacier in Pakistan (36.3° N, 75.5° E) in the Karakoram range. After about 20 years of little movement, the glacier began a rapid surge in October 2016, damming the Shimshal River and forming a lake. Fortunately the river carved an outlet through the ice before a catastrophic outburst. Each scene covers 25 by 27.8 km. The image exemplifies modern remote sensing used to track glacial dynamics and natural hazards in a warming world.

Curious detailDato curioso

ASTER, which captured this scene, is a joint Japan–U.S. mission and can measure ice surface temperature and elevation from orbit with an accuracy of just a few meters.

From my workbench I am fascinated by how ice keeps memory. Look at the long S-shaped glacier: its pale gray surface is striped by dark moraines, lines of debris the glacier drags like involuntary brushstrokes. The contrast between the bright white snow on the summits and the brown ochre slopes reveals granular textures, striations and exposed rock. Small low clouds soften the center, and that reddish blotch at the upper left reminds us that every satellite image is also a technical artifact we must interpret with care.

What thrills me is the orbital gaze. This zenithal view was captured by the ASTER instrument aboard the Terra satellite, combining two dates between 2015 and 2017 over Khurdopin Glacier in Pakistan, at 36.3°N, 75.5°E. From that height, tens of kilometers become veins: ice meanders between jagged ridges of the Karakoram. After twenty quiet years, it surged in 2016 and dammed the Shimshal River, but the water carved a natural outlet. It is pure science observing Earth as if it were another planet.

It looks like a giant ice cream melting between mountains! I see two rivers of ice sliding like white and gray snakes. The biggest one makes a very long S and has dark stripes as if someone painted it with chocolate. Around it there are mountains with white peaks and light brown slopes with little lines. There are tiny clouds floating in the middle and everything looks super big, as if you saw it from a spaceship. Can you imagine skating there without ever falling?
