What you would seeLo que verías
The image is divided into two almost square panels, side by side, set against a deep, grainy black. In each panel a single elongated body appears, pale gray, like a dim smudge suspended in darkness. On the left, labeled 'December 18' in white letters at the bottom, the asteroid stands nearly vertical, slightly tilted to the right, with a rounded upper end and a lower tip that narrows and fades. On the right, labeled 'December 19,' the same body lies horizontally, curved downward like a thick banana or a comma, with the left end thicker and the tip pointing down on the right. Its surface has no visible craters or sharp details: it is made of thousands of tiny bright and dark speckles, the typical grain of a radar image, with brighter areas toward some edges and darker zones in the middle. The background is not completely clean; it has fine noise, almost like dust or static. There is no landscape, sky, scale bar, or human figure for reference. The contrast between the absolute black and the diffuse gray makes the object look fragile, distant, and at the same time strangely organic.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First compare the two panels as if they were two portraits of the same body taken one day apart. Then look at the edges: there is no sharp outline, only grains that fade into the black. That fuzziness changes the reading, because it reminds us that this is not a photograph taken with light, but an image built from radar echoes.
ContextContexto
According to the source data, these are two radar images of the near-Earth asteroid 2003 SD220, obtained on December 18 and 19, 2018, by coordinating observations from the Arecibo Observatory's 1,000-foot (305-meter) antenna in Puerto Rico and the National Science Foundation's 330-foot (100-meter) Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia. The images reveal that the asteroid is at least one mile (1.6 kilometers) long. The credit is NASA/Arecibo/USRA/UCF/GBO/NSF, via NASA/JPL, and the piece was released on December 21, 2018. Its elongated shape and slow apparent change in orientation are consistent with radar observation of a rotating body; exact details of its surface are not known from this image alone.
Certainty of this context: high. Written by an AI model (muse-wonder-1.0) looking at the image and the source record; when in doubt, trust the source.Certeza de este contexto: alta. Curious detailDato curioso
The asteroid measures at least 1.6 kilometers from end to end, yet in the image it seems to fit inside a small dark square: the radar compresses an enormous distance into a handful of gray grains.
Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse
- How does our perception of an asteroid change when we see it through radar echoes rather than through light?¿Cómo cambia nuestra percepción de un asteroide cuando lo vemos mediante ecos de radar y no con luz?
- What does this elongated, curved shape suggest about the history and movement of this body in space?¿Qué sugiere esta forma alargada y curva sobre la historia y el movimiento de este cuerpo en el espacio?
- How can we imagine the real scale of something that appears small and grainy, but is more than a kilometer long?¿Cómo podemos imaginar la escala real de algo que se ve pequeño y granuloso, pero mide más de un kilómetro de largo?

I pause at how fragile this image is. It is not a photo taken with light, it is an echo turned into dots. I see two panels on a grainy black where a pale, faint, speckled gray floats. The brighter edge and the darker center are not paint, they are how the radar bounced back. The white labels for December 18 and 19 remind me not to touch anything: that grain is information. Over time, this digital dust must also be preserved as it is.

What excites me is how two giant antennas listened to this visitor. Arecibo in Puerto Rico and Green Bank in West Virginia worked together in December 2018 to light up asteroid 2003 SD220 with radar. In one panel we see it almost vertical and the next day lying down and curved like a comma. It did not change shape, it is rotating. Knowing it measures at least 1.6 kilometers makes it even more impressive and close.

It looks like a little space ghost. On the left it is standing up like a crooked little stick and on the right it is lying down like a banana or a giant comma. It is light gray with lots of little dots like when the TV has no signal. It is all alone on a very, very black background. I wonder if it is spinning around. If I saw it up close, I think it would be like a huge rock floating in the darkness.
