What you would seeLo que verías

A horizontal triptych of three black-and-white radar images set against a grainy, near-black background. Each panel shows the same elongated asteroid floating slightly differently as it rotates and approaches. Its texture is rough and pitted, like porous volcanic rock dusted with powder, with mottled bright highlights and deep shadows that emphasize its topography. On the left it appears almost horizontal, with a wavy backbone shape, broader on the left and with a small bump near the middle. In the center it is tilted diagonally upward, narrower, with successive bulges that suggest the silhouette of a manatee or a bone. On the right it stands vertically, highly stylized like a baton or cylinder, with striations and a pronounced groove near one end. Radar speckle creates static-like noise across the entire background, with scattered white dots. There is no horizon or human scale reference, only the rocky body suspended in darkness, luminous on the side illuminated by radar and dark on the opposite side.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Follow the three panels from left to right as a time sequence, noticing how the same rock shifts orientation. Focus on the bright rims and the transverse groove in the right panel — that crease shows it is not a smooth stone but a body with geological structure and depth.

ContextContexto

This is a set of three radar images of near-Earth asteroid 2003 SD220 taken on Dec. 15-17, 2018, through coordinated observations between NASA's 70-meter Goldstone antenna in California and the 100-meter Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia. The asteroid is at least 1.6 kilometers long and was discovered on Sept. 29, 2003, by the Lowell Observatory Near-Earth-Object Search (LONEOS). Its flyby on Dec. 22, 2018, at about 2.9 million kilometers was its closest in more than 400 years, with the next comparable approach not until 2070. The images reach a spatial resolution as fine as 3.7 meters per pixel.

Curious detailDato curioso

Although it looks like an optical photo, this is a bistatic radar portrait: Goldstone transmitted the signal and Green Bank received it, achieving a sharpness of 3.7 meters per pixel from millions of kilometers away.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. How does your perception of the asteroid change when you see it rotating across three moments instead of a single frame?¿Cómo cambia tu percepción del asteroide al verlo rotar en tres instantes en lugar de una sola toma?
  2. What do you feel when seeing an object over a kilometer long rendered in such detail without any human scale?¿Qué te hace sentir ver un objeto de más de un kilómetro de largo flotando con tanto detalle pero sin escala humana?
  3. In what ways can a scientific image made with radio waves also be read as an abstract sculpture?¿De qué manera una imagen científica hecha con ondas de radio puede también leerse como una escultura abstracta?

I focus on the texture and how to preserve what cannot be touched. These three images are radar, not optical photos, so the grainy background and the speckled white noise are part of the data itself. The asteroid, at least 1.6 kilometers long, looks rugged and porous, with deep shadows outlining its relief and a notch near one end. The resolution of 3.7 meters per pixel lets us read every bump without erasing the noise, which is also history.

What thrills me here is the trick used to see it. This is not visible light but radar from Goldstone in California and Green Bank in West Virginia, between December 15 and 17, 2018. Asteroid 2003 SD220, discovered on September 29, 2003, flew by on December 22 at about 2.9 million kilometers, its closest in more than 400 years. In the triptych you see it rotate: horizontal, diagonal and vertical, elongated like a baton, its silhouette changing with each turn.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a giant rock floating in the dark. In the first picture it is lying down like a whale's back, in the second it is tilted with little bumps like a manatee, and in the third it is standing up like a little stick. It is all scratchy, with shiny dust and very black shadows, and behind it there are white dots like TV static. I like that there is no ground or sky, just it spinning alone. It is huge, more than a kilometer long, and it passed near Earth at Christmas.
