What you would seeLo que verías
The image is a horizontal digital triptych. The left panel, taking up nearly two thirds of the frame, is a vivid thermal map covering the southeastern coast of the United States; at its lower center sits the vortex of Hurricane Dorian, a near-perfect spiral seen from above. The eye appears as a small, crisp circle in intense red and yellow, surrounded by concentric rings that fade through lime green, electric blue and deep purple, indicating different cloud-top temperatures. The texture is grainy, typical of a thermal sensor, with filamentary clouds stretching northward over Virginia and North Carolina. In the upper left corner a color bar from blue to red shows brightness temperature, along with orbit data, date and time. A 400-kilometer scale bar rests at the bottom. On the upper right, an optical satellite view shows the same system in natural tones of white, green and ocean blue, with the coastline clearly outlined. On the lower right, a small reference map places the multicolored swath over the Atlantic against a black background.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the red eye of the hurricane in the thermal image and then compare its shape to the white swirl in the optical photo on the right. Notice how the cool purple and blue tones trace fine, turbulent structures that look like a uniform white mass at first glance.
ContextContexto
According to source data, the image was captured on September 6, 2019 by ECOSTRESS, the thermal radiometer aboard the International Space Station, as Hurricane Dorian made landfall in North Carolina. The instrument senses emitted infrared radiation converted to Kelvin; red shows warmer temperatures such as the eye, while purple and blue indicate cooler tops of strong storm clouds with heavy rain potential. Launched in June 2018, ECOSTRESS was designed primarily to assess plant health, but its high-resolution measurements also support observation of fires, urban heat and hurricanes to improve weather models. The swath, about 400 kilometers wide, corresponds to the station's pass over the region.
Certainty of this context: high. Written by an AI model (muse-spark-open-1026) looking at the image and the source record; when in doubt, trust the source.Certeza de este contexto: alta. Curious detailDato curioso
Although its main goal is to monitor plants, ECOSTRESS can detect temperature changes within tenths of a degree over areas as small as a football field, revealing hurricane details invisible in standard photographs.

I look at this triptych and think about materials and layers. The large panel on the left is a grainy thermal map covering the southeastern coast of the United States, with the spiral of Hurricane Dorian at the center. The eye in intense red and yellow tells me warmth, while the rings in green, electric blue and purple point to cold cloud tops. On the upper right is the optical view in natural whites and blues, and below the black reference map. What interests me most is false color as a preservation code: each tone translates brightness temperature in Kelvin.

From my rooftop I dream of watching like the International Space Station does. This image, taken on September 6, 2019 by ECOSTRESS aboard the station, makes me feel inside its orbit. The swath is about 400 kilometers wide and shows Dorian making landfall in North Carolina. Red marks the warmer eye and violet and blue the colder, higher clouds where heavy rain can occur. I love that an instrument designed to measure plant health can also capture a hurricane and help improve weather models.

It looks like a giant eye in space! In the big map on the left I see a spiral with a little red and yellow dot in the middle, like a pupil, and around it rings of green, blue and purple that look like candy. The clouds stretch like threads upward. On the upper right is the same hurricane but white and fluffy over the blue sea, and below there is a little black map that shows where everything is. The scale says 400 kilometers. I imagine red is toasty warm and blue is super cold.
