A grainy black-and-white image with the look of a wide-field astronomical photograph, covered in stellar noise. The background is a mottled gray with a fine, sandy texture, sprinkled with about twenty luminous dots of varying size and brightness: stars. Most are small white circles, a few brighter and sharper near the top and left edge, others fainter and more diffuse toward the borders. At the center, a perfect red circle, digitally added, frames the main subject: a small, elongated white streak, slightly diagonal, a few millimeters long in the image, with straight edges and slightly softened ends. It looks like a chalk mark on a dark slate. There are no planets or human-scale references, only the dotted void. The light is cool and even, without shadows, typical of a long-exposure scientific capture. The contrast is striking between the sharpness of the highlighted trail and the vast, blurry, granular field surrounding it.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First find the red circle in the center; it is the only color and guides the eye. Then look at the white streak it encloses, compare it with the round dots of the stars and notice its elongated shape caused by motion. Finally step back visually to feel the scale: a tiny trail in an immense, grainy field.

ContextContexto

The image shows asteroid 2020 QG captured by the wide-field camera of the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF), a sky survey telescope funded by the National Science Foundation and NASA and based at Caltech's Palomar Observatory in Southern California. It was detected on Aug. 16, 2020, at 12:08 a.m. EDT and, according to NASA/JPL, made the closest approach to Earth on record for a non-impacting asteroid. The picture was taken six hours after closest approach, as the asteroid was heading away from Earth. The source is the NASA Image and Video Library (PIA24038), credited to NASA/JPL and ZTF/Caltech Optical Observatories. No further exposure details are provided.

Curious detailDato curioso

2020 QG passed just about 1,830 miles (2,950 km) above the southern Indian Ocean, closer than many satellites orbit, and was not spotted until hours after closest approach because of its small size and approach from the direction of the Sun.

What strikes me is how fragile this image looks, with that speckled grainy gray background that feels like old paper. There are about twenty little white dots that are stars, but all attention goes to the center. There is a perfect red circle there, clearly added digitally to point something out. Inside is the star of the show: a thin white streak, slightly diagonal, like a chalk mark. I wonder how to highlight something so tiny without altering its noisy surroundings and how to preserve that cold, even light.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

When I see this photo from the Zwicky Transient Facility at Palomar, I understand why sky surveillance excites me so much. The background is pure stellar noise in black and white, with stars of different brightness, and in the center the red circle says: look here. That long white streak is asteroid 2020 QG, captured six hours after its closest approach on August 16, 2020 at 12:08 a.m. EDT. According to NASA/JPL, it was the closest recorded flyby without impact. Thinking that little line just brushed past Earth takes my breath away.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This photo looks like a giant blackboard full of shiny dust. The background is gray with lots of little white dots that are stars, like when you sprinkle sugar. In the middle there is a super round red circle someone made on the computer to say: here it is! Inside there is a tiny white line, as if someone drew with chalk and it was moving super fast. I like to imagine it is a space marble playing hide and seek and we finally found it six hours after it passed really close by.
