What you would seeLo que verías

This is a clean digital scientific illustration set against a dark charcoal background, with a white header reading «Possible Interiors of TRAPPIST-1 Exoplanets». It is organized into three side-by-side panels, each showing a spherical planet sliced in half to expose its interior in slight three-quarter view. On the left, the «No Core» model displays a rocky surface mottled with ochre, pale blue and white patches suggesting land and clouds, and a uniform interior in soft glowing orange that brightens toward the center, with no distinct core. In the middle, «Mantle + Core» has a similar surface, a thick beige mantle and a small ovoid inner core in intense grainy orange with a luminous center. On the right, «Ocean + Mantle + Large Core» features a thick translucent blue outer shell indicating a deep global ocean, a thin sandy mantle and a large bright reddish-orange core. Small white captions sit beneath each planet. Light appears to emanate from within each sphere, creating a warm gradient from core to mantle. The overall layout is balanced, symmetrical and educational, with strong contrast between cool blues and warm core tones.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start by scanning the three cross-sections from left to right and watch how the glowing orange core grows or disappears. Compare the outer shells, especially the translucent blue ocean layer on the right versus the rocky crusts on the others. Notice how nearly identical surfaces can hide radically different interiors, which is the central idea of the graphic.

ContextContexto

The illustration was released on January 22, 2021 by NASA/JPL-Caltech via the NASA Image and Video Library. It visualizes three hypothetical interior structures for the seven rocky exoplanets orbiting the ultra-cool dwarf star TRAPPIST-1, based on precise density measurements. The planets show remarkably similar densities, slightly lower than Earth or Venus, suggesting they may share a common ratio of planet-forming elements with proportionally less iron or more light materials such as water. The models include a coreless planet with oxidized iron mixed throughout, an Earth-like differentiated planet with a proportionally smaller iron-rich core, and a variant with a large core balanced by a deep surface ocean, a scenario considered plausible only for the four cooler outer planets.

Curious detailDato curioso

The TRAPPIST-1 system, about 40 light-years away in the constellation Aquarius, hosts seven Earth-sized rocky worlds, the largest number of such planets found in a single system to date, with several lying within the habitable zone where conditions might allow liquid water.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. How can a single measurement like density lead to three very different stories about what is inside a planet?¿Cómo puede un mismo dato, la densidad, generar tres historias tan distintas sobre el interior de un planeta?
  2. What shifts in our sense of habitability when we picture a coreless world versus one covered by a global ocean?¿Qué cambia en nuestra imaginación al ver un mundo sin núcleo frente a uno cubierto por un océano global?
  3. If we could slice Earth open like these models, what would we expect to see and what might still surprise us?Si pudiéramos cortar la Tierra como en la ilustración, ¿qué esperaríamos ver y qué nos sorprendería?

I pause to look at how the light seems to come from inside each sphere, with that warm gradient going from light orange to intense reddish orange glowing in the center. The dark gray background and the white title on top help the cutaways stand out with didactic clarity. I notice three different textures: the uniform interior with no core, the beige mantle with a small oval granular core, and the thick translucent blue ocean layer. It is a clean, symmetrical and carefully crafted digital illustration meant to explain without complex words.

What fascinates me is that these three models try to explain the same clue: the precisely measured densities of the seven rocky worlds of TRAPPIST-1, slightly lower than Earth or Venus. On the left, the no-core model mixes oxidized iron uniformly. In the center, a mantle plus a small iron-rich core. On the right, a large core balanced by a deep ocean, a scenario that would only work in the cold of the four outer planets because on the three inner ones water would evaporate.

They look like three giant marbles cut in half to see what is inside, like candies with filling. The first one is all light orange inside, with no little ball in the center. The second has a sand-colored layer and a small shiny orange ball. The third is my favorite because it has blue water outside, like a huge swimming pool that wraps the whole planet, and inside a big glowing ball that looks super warm. They all float on a dark gray background.
