What you would seeLo que verías
A large, irregular asteroid dominates the center of a deep black space flecked with faint, distant stars. The body has a lumpy, potato-like silhouette with a heavily cratered and craggy surface. Multiple impact craters mark the visible face, including a pair of small, sharp, dark-rimmed bowls near the upper center and a larger, softer depression to their left, all casting subtle shadows. The terrain is highly textured, with jagged ridges, pitted plains, and blocky outcrops. Color shifts with topography: sunlit crests glow in warm tan, beige and rusty brown, while shadowed slopes and lowlands turn to cool slate-blue and charcoal gray, suggesting a blend of rocky and metallic materials. Light appears to strike from the upper left, sculpting strong highlights and deep blue shadows that emphasize roughness and relief. In the lower left corner, the faint word «Illustration» is barely visible against the black background. There is no atmosphere or horizon, only the solitary, 226-kilometer-wide world suspended in darkness, conveying both immense scale and quiet isolation.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First take in the whole silhouette against the starry void to feel its isolation. Then follow the light across the surface from the bright upper edge into the deep blue shadows below. Look closely at the paired craters near the top; their contrast between highlight and shadow holds the clue to the imagined metal-rock texture.
ContextContexto
This is a scientific illustration created in March 2021 by artist Peter Rubin for NASA/JPL-Caltech/Arizona State University, catalogued as PIA24472. It depicts the 226-kilometer-wide main-belt asteroid (16) Psyche, located between Mars and Jupiter. Based on Earth-based data, scientists believe Psyche is a mixture of metal and rock. This view illustrates one hypothesis: that metal and rock are intimately mixed on a scale too fine to resolve from orbit, as opposed to a companion illustration (PIA24471) showing large distinct provinces. At the time, NASA's Psyche mission was scheduled to launch in August 2022, arrive in 2026, and orbit for 21 months to study composition, topography and magnetic field with a magnetometer, multispectral imager and gamma-ray and neutron spectrometers.

Curious detailDato curioso
If Psyche is indeed a stripped planetary core, studying it from orbit could help scientists understand how Earth and other rocky planets formed their own metallic cores, without being able to visit them directly.
Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse
- How does knowing this is an informed guess rather than a photograph affect how you trust the image?¿Qué nos dice una superficie con metal y roca tan mezclados sobre el origen violento o tranquilo de un mundo?
- What might the coexistence of shiny metal and dull rock on one surface tell us about violent collisions in the early solar system?¿Cómo cambia tu percepción al saber que esta no es una foto, sino una hipótesis visual hecha antes de llegar?
- How does the emptiness around the asteroid shape your sense of time and scale?¿Qué sensaciones te provoca ver un objeto tan grande y a la vez tan aislado en la oscuridad?

The conservatorLa restauradora
As a conservator I focus on the surface crafted by hand by Peter Rubin in March 2021 for NASA/JPL-Caltech. I see a skin split between porous and polished, where craters with deep shadows coexist with patches of subtle metallic sheen. The warm light coming from above and to the left leaves bright whites on the ridges and grayish blues in shadow, revealing the hypothesis of an intimate mixture of metal and rock indistinguishable from orbit. I am moved by the fragility of this illustration that tries to touch a 226-kilometer world without having visited it yet.
The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado
As an amateur astronomer I am excited to recognize (16) Psyche floating alone in the main belt between Mars and Jupiter. This illustration PIA24472 is not a photo, it is a scientific idea from March 2021 proposing metal and rock mixed at a very small scale, unlike another version with separate provinces. I keep looking at the craters of different sizes and that ochre and brownish glow hinting at metal beneath rock. I think about the Psyche mission that was to launch in 2022 to arrive in 2026 and orbit for 21 months with a magnetometer and cameras to finally test it.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
It looks like a giant potato floating in the dark! I see a huge rock full of little dents like marble craters, some with very black little shadows and others smoother. Some bits shine like metal and others feel scratchy like earth in ochre and toasted brown. It is alone in black space with tiny little stars and light hits it from above like a lamp. It says it measures 226 kilometers, way bigger than my school! I like to imagine touching it and feeling how cold and scratchy it is at the same time.
