What you would seeLo que verías

This is a top-down satellite view, presented as a diamond shape against a deep, solid black background. The landmass fills the frame with a vast, textured delta plain in rusty reds, brick browns and muted ochres, its surface mottled and intricately veined like organic tissue. Two broad main river channels, pale silvery blue-gray, meander from the south toward the north, splitting into countless finer distributaries, oxbow lakes and elongated ponds. Hundreds of small white and pale blue patches — frozen lakes and residual snow — are scattered across the terrain, more densely in the central and southern areas. To the north, an uneven white fringe of sea ice and snow marks the coastline where the delta meets the dark navy blue of the Bering Sea. The illumination is even and flat, typical of daytime satellite imagery, with no cast shadows, allowing the dendritic, lace-like water patterns to stand out sharply against the tundra. The scale is immense yet compressed: 60 by 60 kilometers rendered in a single view, where every curve and braid shows water slowly sculpting the earth over time.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start by tracing the two pale, winding main rivers that run from south to north across the reddish plain. Then look to the white icy margin at the top, where land meets sea, and notice how the smaller channels feather out into a delicate, almost invisible web.

ContextContexto

This image shows the Yukon River Delta on Alaska's west coast, acquired on May 10, 2017 by the ASTER instrument aboard NASA's Terra satellite and released by NASA/JPL on March 8, 2022. It covers an area of 60 by 60 km centered near 62.9° north, 164.3° west. According to source data, the combined Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta is one of the largest in the world at over 130,000 square kilometers, emptying into the Bering Sea. About 25,000 Alaska Native residents live in the combined delta region. The reddish tones are false color processing used to highlight vegetation and water features for scientific interpretation.

Curious detailDato curioso

ASTER, the sensor that captured this view, is a joint U.S.-Japan instrument orbiting at 705 kilometers altitude and can map surface temperature, elevation and vegetation change at resolutions as fine as 15 meters.

The conservatorLa restauradora

As a restorer, I am struck by the mottled and rough texture of this plain seen from above, it looks like skin weathered by time. I notice how the false color tints the tundra in reddish and ochre tones to separate vegetation and water, while the river arms in silvery bluish gray meander and split into fine channels. I am moved by the bright white frozen lakes dotting the center and south, and that strip of ice to the north touching the dark blue of the sea, all under even light with no shadows that reveals each meander like a delicate crack.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

As an amateur astronomer I am thrilled to know this diamond-shaped view on a black background comes from the ASTER instrument on the Terra satellite, taken on May 10, 2017. I picture a 60 by 60 kilometer square centered near 62.9° north, 164.3° west, where geography reads from space like a living map. The two main branches flowing north and splitting into hundreds of channels and frozen lagoons remind me of veins seen through a telescope, a natural laboratory photographed daily to understand the planet.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like Earth turned into a drawing! I see a diamond shape floating in the black of space like a giant sticker. The reddish brown looks like dinosaur skin with little dots, and the rivers are two silver snakes that turn into lots of tiny snakes and white puddles with ice. At the top there is a white edge like snow touching the dark blue sea. I love that there are no shadows and everything looks clear, as if the water were endlessly playing at making paths on the land.
