What you would seeLo que verías
The image presents a vast, cloud-like cosmic structure suspended against a deep, velvety black background. At its heart lie two large, hollow cavities glowing in pale icy blue and brilliant white, like luminous eyes opening within mist. Surrounding them, layers of dust spread outward in translucent, smoky veils: pearly white near the core, soft muted olive-green along the intermediate rims, and intense burnt orange to deep crimson toward the left edge and lower portions. The texture is fluffy and filamentary, with wispy tendrils, dense clumps and dark lanes that create a strong sense of depth and three-dimensional volume. Light seems to radiate from within the hollows, diffusing outward and tinting the nearby dust with a warm glow. The upper regions are darker, with brownish-red haze fading into blackness. A tiny isolated blue dot appears near the bottom right corner. No individual stars are visible; the entire scale is dominated by colored dust alone, evoking an aerial view of a glowing storm system.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the two bright blue hollows in the center, then follow the color transition from white to green to red toward the edges. Notice how the lack of visible stars makes the dust itself appear to glow and sculpts the sense of enormous empty chambers.
ContextContexto
This composite infrared view of the Orion Nebula was released on Nov. 22, 2022, using archival data from NASA's Spitzer and WISE/NEOWISE missions and ESA's Herschel Space Telescope, credited to ESA/NASA/JPL-Caltech and managed by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. It shows only dust, not stars. Blue denotes warm dust heated by unseen massive stars, green indicates slightly cooler dust around two radiation-carved cavities, and red shows very cold dust around -260 Celsius on the cloud's outskirts detected by Herschel. These cavities were sculpted by stellar winds and radiation from stars up to a million times more luminous than the Sun.

Curious detailDato curioso
This infrared view reveals dust temperatures ranging from intensely warm near the hidden stars to about minus 260 degrees Celsius in the red outer regions, and it was assembled from three retired or repurposed space telescopes.
Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse
- How does knowing these colors represent invisible infrared light change your reading of the image?¿Cómo cambia tu percepción al saber que los colores no son visibles al ojo humano sino una traducción del infrarrojo?
- What does it mean that the most powerful forces shaping the cloud remain completely unseen here?¿Qué te sugiere la idea de que estrellas que no se ven sean las que esculpen estas formas enormes?
- Do you experience this more as scientific evidence or as abstract art?¿Te parece que la imagen se ve más como un fenómeno científico o como una pintura abstracta, y por qué?

The conservatorLa restauradora
What fascinates me here is not stars, but the dust itself. I see two large oval cavities in pale blue and white, surrounded by veils that look like cotton or smoke lit from within. To restore this image is to respect its layers: the pearly white at the core, the soft olive green at the rims, and the orange red toward the edges. Every thin filament and dark vein is fragile and must keep its depth. It is like cleaning a huge fresco, where light does not come from outside, but is born from the material itself.
The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado
This is not a regular visible photo, it is pure infrared astronomy from November 22, 2022, with data from Spitzer, WISE and Herschel. The blue shows warm dust heated by massive invisible stars you cannot see but that carved those two cavities with radiation and winds. The green is cooler dust at the rims, and the intense red is freezing dust at about -260 °C captured by Herschel. Without those hidden stars, shining up to a million times brighter than the Sun, this sculpture made of invisible light would not exist.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
It looks like a giant cloud in space with two big blue eyes wide open staring at you. Around it there is fluffy smoky stuff in colors, bright white in the middle, light green and orange red at the edges like a warm blanket. Up close it looks like stretched cotton candy with thin threads and little dark clumps. Down at the bottom right there is a lonely little blue dot, like a lost marble. There are no tiny stars, just the huge cloud floating in the blackness like a storm seen from an airplane.

I count eyes in the mist: how many large cavities in pale blue and bright white open up at the center of the cloud?
HintPista
Look at the center of the image, they are oval shaped and look like luminous eyes.
#2
If I follow the dust temperature, what color shows the very cold dust at about -260 °C seen toward the left and lower edge?
HintPista
It looks warm to the eye but in infrared it means the coldest, captured by Herschel.
#3
Across the whole dark scene there are no point-like stars, but what small isolated blue detail can you spot in the lower right corner?
HintPista
Search at the bottom right, apart from the two large cavities, it is like a lonely marble.
